Dogs and cats have typically found a good life in many rural homes. On the back of the photograph (second row, third photo) the woman commented on her dog's distinctive personality: "Me and the dog - he loves to get his picture taken." In the 19th and early 20th centuries, prior to the mass adoption of cars, horses also played a key role in the day to day activities of a household.
