The TJppei School examinations begin on June 16th and countinue until June :' " Several pupils of the High School are undertaking the difficult task of completing a year's work in Music along with their school work. Alreadv several have written or will write shortly their examinations in Music: Noreen Purdy Grace Peterson, Norma Bell, Jean Cosens, and Doris Joss., The Secretary in the Sailor's Mission acknowledges the receipt of $2.20 contributed by the pupils' and staff of this school. The formal opening of the big Singapore graving-dock last week is worthy of notice as being the victual coinpli tion of a great naval base at a cost of £10.000,000 pounds, supplied with a dock large enough to provide speedy repairs for the largest battleship of 57,000 tons if ships so large should yet be constructed. It represents a great engineering feat, one of the greatest achievements of the past decade. It is built on land thiatt was once swamp and rendered solid only by driving 4.000 piles some of them as much as 100 feet into the yielding earth down to a solid foundation. To level the earth for this construction 6,000,000 cubic yards hsJ6" to be excavated. Hillocks if not mountains had to be removed and dumped into the swamlp to create solid ground. On this rebuilt surface has been laid many miles of firm, roadway as well as 17 miles of railway track. Add a vast air-hase, with hangars, a dockyard with sheds, stores, wharfs, bar rack accommodation for 7,000 troops and living quarters for 6,000 civilian population. electric-power station, hospitals, ofifces, workshops, and you have some idea of the activity concentrated at this new eastern base. To the cost of this construction, New Zealand contributed £1,000,000 and the Malay Federated States C 2.1100,000 in addition to a personal contribution of £500,000 from the Sultan of Johore. No hint of aggression is contained in this huge construction. It is a base for repairs now available for the vast fleet of commercial carriers that are involved in the Empire's sea-borne commerce in the Far Eastern and the Australian trade. It is difficult to calculate the immense volume of imports that pass through waters within 1,000 miles of Singapore to feed the factories of British cities er to feed the British citizens themselves. Tin, rubber and wool, tea, meat and spices, all come from, the East and out from those British factories go to the East almost everything that the East requires, cotton goods, wool goods and electrical goods, machinery, pottery and hardware. The Singapore base is only a reasonable insurance on the safe transfer ol this mighty volume of commerce. I As an insight into the capad^^vf the United Kingdom as a usW^f food, almost all the British Empire's exports of eggs, two-thirds of the egg exports from Denmark and Poland, half of the egg shipments from the Netherlands and China, and one-third the egg exports from Egypt, together with the home production in Britain, were absorbed bv the British market in 1936. The United Kingdom is the chief mporting country in the world for canned meat, absorbing about 60 per cent of the world's exports. The United States is second, and France third, while Canada and the Union of South Africa have been taking increased quantities. pproximately 99 per cent of the Canadian egg production is consumed Canada. Apart from the possibility a further increase in exports to the United Kingdom, states the Agricultural Situation and Outlook, there is no indication that the demand for eggs in 1938 will vary materially from that of 1937.
