Vox Nostrae Scholae Popular Mechanics in its April number gives sonre interesting facts regarding the Grand Coulee Dam now being erected cn the Columbia River in the State of Washington. Although Boulder Dam ia Colorado is the Largest structure ever built by man it is only one-thitrd as large as this latest dam which will develop one and one-half as much power and provide irrigation for an area one and one-half times the State of Rhode Island. The 23,000,000 tons of concrete of which is composed will bulk 4 times the volume of the Great Pyramid. When finished in another three years, th* dam will be nearly a mile long and three times as high as Niagara Falls. It will back up a lake clear to the Canadian border 151 miles long and it will generate 2, 700,000 horse pow-er or more than the seven dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority com^ bined. Two thousand square miles of potentially rich but at present arid agricultural land is the justification for the immense expenditure involved in this dam built for purposes of irrigation in the Big Bend country. To begin this construction, two towns had to be built to house the 6000 workmen and engineers. Then to ensure that bed rock was reached for the foundation of the dam, nearly 49 mftles of hardened drill steel was1 worn away. And to make sure that the foundation granite itself was as strong as possible, ten miles of 'grout' holes were drilled into it and 12,500 tons of cement grout forced into these holes under pressure. Every day, 15,000 barrels of cement, 21,750 tons of sand and gravel, and 360,000 gallons of water, changed into 15,000 cubic yards of concrete are poured into place in the dam, at the rate of one cubic yard every 5% seconds. It is estimated that the dam and power houses will cost a total otf $178,790,000 and that the combined dam and irrigation project wil represent a total investment of $378,631.-000. "Brother Rat" is the name of an Amercan stage-play which was presented at the Royal Alexandra p Toronto during the Easter week. This same play was given in Toroni'o last fall and the favourable reception it received then warranted last week's return engagement. The plot of the play is laid against the background of the Virginia Military Institute. There, the cadets give one another the fraternal name of 'Brother Rat' -- whence, the title of the play. The play opens on the eve of the annual baseball game, which is one of the events to which the cadets are privileged to invite the "girls they left behind them." One of the most popular girls, Joyce Win. fr e, has brought her room-mate with her; and this roon>mate whose ambition is to become a bacteriologist and whose scholarship is betrayed by horn-rimmed spectaces, is Claire Ramm, the daughter of the ConKnan; dant of the Institute. Very early in the play it is divulged that Bing Edwards, one of the cadets, has been secretly married. In excitement over talking with his wife. Bing misses parade: and. although he is the star pitcher of the baseball team, is condemned to confinement to his quarters. That same evening Bing's roommates, Billy Randolph and Dan Crawford, break bounds to visit Joyce and Claire. Their evening is spoiled by the unexpected and clamitous arrival of Claire's father, the Commadant. As a consequence, the cadets are confined to their quarters the following hen the baseball game is to be The ■xt day comes, and, at the te. Bing is permitted to play. He is, however, so much occupied with some information his wife had given him that he fails dismally and has to be replaced in the second innings. Bing, Dan, and Billy are given sentry duty for the nest two months and the third and last act shows them completing their punishment. Bing is worrying about a chemistry examination he is to write the next morning and for which he has had no time to prepare. As he bemoans his situation. Qaire and Joyce appear, and Claire offers to help him after the sentry duty has been completed. Accordingly site if smuggled into the Institute. As is to 'be expected, Claire is discovered by the cadet officer on duty, but when she reveals her identity, the secrecy of her visit is as- The last scene takes place on graduation day. Again, the audience is not surprised to learn that Bing has passed his chemistry examination with flying colours. Word is brought-to him that his son was born early that morning. This makes him the first of his class to become a father, a fact which entitles him to a prize. From this very brief, and somewhat unjust outline of the plot of "Brother Rat" it wll be evident that the play is inconsquential and lacking in sound dramatic workmanship. There are too many loose ends and undeveloped suggestions of coming action, for the play to be completely satisfying from the point of view of construction. "Bother Rat" was evidently written for that type of American audience that demands entertainment and amusement without exertion. The plot lends itself to slap-stick interpretation. Profanity is used in an effort to arouse laughter, and a number of the lines are unnecessarily crude. Another source of amusement, perhaps unintentional, was the pain-fully Southern accent of some of the actors. The actors took their parts with spirit, and the rapidity of the dialogue and the agility of the cadets helped to improve the play. It has been suggested that the play was trivial. The neding was weak and left one feeling that one had spent two and a half hours in entertainment that was insipid and, at times, in doubtful taste. It must, however, be remembered that "Brother Rat" was so popular in Presentation to Mr. and Mrs. F. Ventress From Belleville Intelligencer: On Monday evening of this week friends and neighbours assembled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank 125 Vic Ave. bid them farewell before they left their new home near Colborne. A short program in which all took part, was given, after which Rev. D. T. McClintok spoke of the los3 to the community of such estimable people and wished them happiness in their new home. Mrs. Murray on Jbehalf of the friends presented Mr. and Mrs. Ventress with a handsome gift and appropriate replies were given by Mr. and Mrs. Ventress. Mrs. M. Arthurs gave two recitatons which were much enjoyed. A dainty lunch was served by the ladies and a social half hour spent. Vulcanizing Mold Bursts Attendant Badly Burned Harry Hess, service station attendant of Trenton, narrowly escaped serious injury and was badly burned when his clothing caught fire after being saturated with hot melted rubber while vulcanizing a tire recently. WliUbur Cox, who was in the service station at the time, was successful in beating out the flaming clothes, and saving Hess from more serious injuries. Hess was employed vulcanizing a tire, when suddenly the mold, in which the tire was being repaired, burst resulting in the hot melted rubber flying1 oveir Hess' clothes 'and body. His clothing ignited while his hands were burned with rubber also. R.C.A. Between Canadian and New Zealand cheese, keen competition exists in British Guiana. Following the unorthodox examiple of a leading importer who cut up 80 to 100 lbs. New Zealand cheeses into sizes as small as 3 lb. for distribution to the smaller retail shops, two cheese vendors of Canadian cheese have adopted this method. In 1927 Canada supplied British Guiana with 139,865 lbs. of cheese, New Zealand sent 85.865 lib.; the United Kingdom. 17,854 lb., and foreign countres • 47,480 lbs.
