Our schools are taking part in the choruses, solos and instrumentals at the Music Festival, held in Colborne this week. Mr. Dennis Lathrope and Mr. C. Ghent attended the funeral of Mr. Hart, at Havelock, aged 100 years and five months. Mrs. Irvin Roibeon has- returned to Toronto, after spending several weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Wolfraim. Mr. and Mrs. Niles Burleigh have moved hack into our community, after living in Mr. M. Harnden's tenant house in Vernonville. Special Services are being held in the Free Methodist Church every night this week. Rev. Kay is the speaker of the evening. All are cordially invited. IMr. and Mrs. Arthur Ellis and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Haynes spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. E. Smith, at Frankford. Mrs. Fitzgerald returned home with them, after spending several weeks there. Miss Irene Peebles and Miss Ruth Cowae entertained the players of the play, "Correspondence Courtship," in :he Community Hall, on Monday evening, to a party. The evening was spent in playing games and a delicious lunch was served. The people on Wednesday morning of last week were" aroused early by the fire ring, when Mr. Herman Lean's house caught fire. Mr. Lean had nicely lit a fire and went out when smoke was smelt clearly. Soon fire was the .result. Men rushed to the aid and saved most of the furni- Mr. Henry Lathrope of Bowman ville spent Sunday with Mr. and Mis Dennis Lathrope. Mr. Frank Wolfraim and daughter of Centreton spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Wolfraim and other relatives. We are sorry to .report that Mrs. C. Whitney is confined to her bed and under the doctor's care. We hope for a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Jack JJallory and daughter Joan of Warkworth. and Mrs. Arthur Ellis vijsited Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lean on Sunday. The play "Correspondence Courtship" is very popuar these days. It has been presented eight times and have invitations to go to Nonham, Burnley and Codrington this week. Mr. S. A. Clarke of Morganston, Mrs. Lome Haynes, Mrs. C. Whitney and daughters Eileen and Verna, attended the Evangelistic Services at Smithfield. on Wednesday evening. A shower was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hernan Lean on Friday evening, where a good crowd utensils, fruit and pickles, and other necessities, owing to the loss of their house. At lunch hour . Mr. Fred Black md Mr. Frank Isaac gave speeches expressing their sympathy in their loss. Mt. and Mrs. Lean have moved into Mrs. Papineau's The Young People's League of the United Church held its meeting on Wednesday evening, May 11th. The President, Mr. Raymond Bowen opened the meeting in the usual manner with a hymn, followed by the Lord's Prayer. The Vice-President, Mr. Russell Bake had charge of the following program: Topic--Mrs. D. Arkles. Bible Reading--Goldworth Hinton Duet--Lenore and Glenn Welton. Reading--Mrs. Gerold Welton. Solo--Miss Vivian Bowen. Reading^Mr. Albert Rusk. .Mr. Clarence Nelson was in charge of the contest. The meeting closed with a hymn and the Benediction. The Women's meeting of the Wes-leyan Methodist Church held its business meeting on Wednesday afternoon, May 11th. The President, Mrs. Bennett opened the meeting with a hymn followed by prayer. Bible reading--Mrs. Bennett, with talk on the chapter. This was much enjoyed by all. Readings--Mrs. A. Olmstead, Mrs. H. WShite. Mrs. W. Gillespie. The election of officers was as Pesident--Mrsi J. A. Bennett. Vice-Pres.--Mrs. C. Whitney. Sec.-Treas.--Mrs. W. Gillespie. These meetings will be held every Wednesday afternoon. The May meeting of the Castleton Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. D. Arkles on Thursday, May 12th. with the majority of the memibers and a numiber of visitors present. The new President, Miss Harriet Bowditch in the chair opened the meeting with the Ode and the Lord's Prayer. It was decided not to take the short course this year. The roll call was answered by "An economy wrinkle." The following program was in charge of Mrs. Theo Jones: Reading--Mrs. W. Covert. Solo--Mrs. H. Isaac. Mr. George Russell of Bowmanville spent the weekend at his sister' home, Mr. and Mrs. George Fitchett. Demorest and d.aughters of Madoc were guests of their daughter, Mrs. J. Davidson, on Sunday. Miss Hardinge had the pupils well trained in the drama for Mouthers' Day service. Mr. P. Ewing gave a short address. Mrs. W. Weaver of Trenton spent a couple of days with her sisters and one afternoon at Plainville with their brother, Mr. M. Ames. Mr. Bert Bray had a quantity of wheat -nd oats which he was preparing to sow stolen from his north farm on Thursday night. JACK ROBERTS and Sally have been "friends" for some time. But Jack took Sally by surprise (she really hadn't expected a ring this spring) and in this case one ring naturally led to another. Sally just haa to call Mother who is visiting out-of-town. Quite a numiber from here attended the theatre at Trenton on Saturday last to allow the children to enjoy the picture "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Congratulations to Miss Ma.bel Peacock, who graduated on Friday evening last at the graduating exercises, held in Belleville Collegiate, for eighteen graduate nurses of the Bellev lie General Hospital. The burial of the late Mrs, Ira J Purdy of Bowmanville took place at j the Salem Cemetery on Sunday last. Mrs. Purdy was well and favourably known in Salem, and the sympathy | of the entire comimunity goes out to her friends left to mourn the loss of ! a loving motheir and wife.
