United Young People's Union "When the Orphan Comes to Town" It was during the early part of he year that the United Young People's Union decided to publish a quarterly paper. The purpose for which to add further scope to the Union's work and to give an expression of the talent exis ing in the Union. Prior to the publishing of the paper a very substantial prize had been offered the member who could suggest the most ■ suitable name for it. To make the long and short o£ things our young and most gifted edi or, Mr. Lome Arkles had been up country somewhere in the "Linlith-grow" area. On arrival at the meeting where his paper was to be reviewed. Sorry to say he arrived rather late, as well as somewhat flustered but no one knew the reason why our editor should be so. After much persuasion on his own part he finally adnri ted while coming down to the meeting he had adapted "The Orphan." This to be the name of our first paper, for the first quarter, of our first year and the first Orphan. Thus our Young People's now feel that it has something to support. What an Orphan. It was not lacking in size and a smile for everyone. The Orphan's first message was the editorial by the editor who impressed his audience when he stated that there was' much to do, problems to solve. Many evils to combat si as the liquor traffic, unemploym and social conditions. Therefore youtn must lead the way. We must rush on to our assisting editors. Mr. Gordon Adams cont: '" tes an interesting article "Swing Time" in which he reveals just much we should appreciate good music. The question is just how many people do really enjoy good music. Yet how many there are rave over music that sets ones nerves in turmoil such as some of the different forms of jazz. Music that leaves nothing behind to be remembered but reminds one of the night parade of cats on the garden wall drying to give a musical performs They who compose such miusic' take little time to write it, while composers like Sullivan, Handle and Victor Hugo have spent months, yes years to contribute music that never grows cold or old. Thus we can still appre. iate the fact that there are still mual lovers, those who like music that satisfies. Miss Doris Mutton, another of assisting editors, contributes plenty next quarter in her article from the home cookery department of the Library division that provides plenty of food for thought. No paper would be complete without its fun editoT or somebody said our funny little edi He is no other than our congenial friend, Mr. James Murphy. Jim has had some success, in fact some nion hs ngo he assisted on his group imogramme. By giving the current events statistics from the poultry division as to the number of eggs cold s:oTage, never forgetting to lea cut the hard boiled ones. We nc find h'm graduated to his new position ed from our staff of reporters, tn« members. So the reporter opens the fun page of "The Orphan" for every- The most eligible bachelor of our Union was handed out the most goT-geous bouque' of scentimental lilacs that has ever been given away. When one over active member contributed the poem as fololws: "In Lilac Time" 'Twas in lilac time I told her of my love sublime She only said S- In accents flat I wish that I could li--lac that. And that bachelor certainly sniffled for awhile. Of course you will appn e'a e the fact that the writer keeps the name of that bachelor out of Now just figure it our for yourself: A young man had been trying his wit on his fellow passengers in the train coach. They were getting rather tired of him when suddenly an man sitting in the corner spok< and said. "Listen to this young i Two persons were walking down the street. One was tall the other was short. The tall one was the short one's son but the short one was not the tall one's father." "That's impossible" blurted out the young fellow. "No, it's a fact," replies' the old nan. You see the short one was the all one's mother." Our Young People's has more than ppreciated Gordon Adams' help, but re did not know that he was. so clever until The Orphan whispered his: Mrs. Adams: (displaying a chair jome visitors). "Yes, my son Gordon designed and made this chair completely out of his own head and still has enough wood left to build me a small table to match it." Are Scotchmen tight? Why say some of them save their toys for their second childhood. Alas! the writer feels that he better save space and put our kid orphan away until next quarter. Come to our Young People's a crack a smile. If you cannot, wc snrely help you. It is interesting to note that April 16th the United Young Peopt will present their play here "All Account of Polly." Warnings Go Unheeded The death by electrocution of an Ontario woman recently is evidence .hat there still are people who are vare of the . dangers attending the handling of electrical apparatus Maunfacturers do everything in their power to render such apparatus "fool proof," but the user must cooperate by means of simple precautions where exceptional risks occur. The victim of the fatality referred' to above was found dead in her bath, in which also lay an electric heater used for warming the bathroom, is supposed that she leaned from her bath to switch this out, was electrocuted in doing so. and dropped the heater into the water as she succumbed. It is impossible to lay too much emphasis on the danger of touching even an electric switch with wet hands or while standing in water on a damp surface; though there is no risk when doing so when the hands are dry and the body is by dryshoes on a; dry surface. Some time ago the Ontario Hydro-Electric Commission published a leaflet drawing attention to the perils of careless handling of electric light and power implements. Children especially are likely to handle such things improperly, and to amuse themselves by climbing telephone poles or. the fences by which power apparatus is guarded. They should be warned emphatically of the danger of so doing. I It took many accidents to convince the early users of illuminating gas that searrhing for a gas leak with a naked light was unwise. It appears quite equally difficult to impress on the public that handling electric lights with wet hands may be fatal. March is the harvest month in Egyp1*. Tripoli.
