THE LESSON IN ITS SETTING Time and Place--The passage from Matthew records an event occurring in the autumn of A.D. 29, near Cacsarea Philippi. The parab'.e from Mark was uttered in the autumn of A.D. 28, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. For the second chapter of Acts and the Epistle to the Romans, see the preceding lesson. The Epistle to the Ephesians was written by Paul during his imprisonment at Rome, probably in A.D. 64. The First Epistle of Paul to Timothy was also written under the same circumstances, approximately a year later. ' "Where baptized." It is neither stated nor denied that all were baptized on one day, or in one place, or all by the Apostle Peter. "And there were added unto them in that day about three thousand souls." Those thus added were, of course, those who accepted Christ as their i Saviour, and, as far as the Church was able to determine, had been born again of the Spirit of God. "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching." True conversion is always accompanied by consuming hunger to know more God, and his Son Jesus Christ, "And fellowship." Here inward fellowship rather than an outward manifestation of such. "In the breaking bread." We cannot consistently-plain the expression of a mere c mon meal. It may be true that every such meal in the early days of the Church's first love had a religious significance, that it became a type and evidence of the kingdom of God amongst the believers, but St. Paul's habitual reference of the words before ns to the Lord's Supper leads us to see in them here a reference to the commemoration of the Lord' death, although we may admit that it is altogether indisputable that this commemoration at first followed a common meal. "And the prayers." The Greek has the article here, and stress has sometimes been laid on this, as though the Ch,urch at this early date had some settled form of prayer. But it is enough to refer to 1 : 14, where the article is also found, but which few would wish to ley continued steadfastly This Terrier Is Fun To Do Says Laura Wheele* DOG PATTERN 795 This wire-haired pup will be a popular toy or mascot- He has ill the vim and pertness of the real one, and you can make him as jay as you choose, according to the material you select He is a simple animal to make and will afford the needlewoman pleasure n the making. Toronto Scientists Find One Secret of Childbirth Change In Hormone In Blood Brings On Labor, Detroit Parley Is Told Detnoit.-- The mechanism which causes labor in childbirth has been discovered by three scientists at the University of Toronto, it was closed recently at the meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. "And many wonder; and signs were done through tht apostles." Wonder expresses the re action of one who is present when some miracle is performed; si] dicate the testimony these n bear to the truth the Apostle declaring. "And all that believed wei bether, and had all thing! This idealistic sharing of all posses among the members of th ilem Church was voluntaril; entered into. "And they sold their possession: and goods, and parted them to all, ding as any man had need. Thi rtainly not what has come t be called communism, where all pos equally distributed, for it does not state here that all the Christians sold all they possessed and, furthermore, the distribution made only as need arose, parently from a' common fund. 'I therefore, the prisoner in Lord." Paul was a prisoner Rome because of his loyalty to Lord, but, as a prisoner he was alone, but in Christ's unbroken fellowship. "Beseech you to walk worthily." Worthily derives from a root meaning to draw down the scale, and thus carries the idea of weight, meaning here, of like value, worth as much, befitting, corresponding. "Of the calling wherewith ye were called (Eph. 1 : 18; Rom. 11 : 29; Phil. 3 : 14; 2 Tim. 1 : 9; Heb. 3 : 1, etc.). They were to walk in unison with their heavenly calling--not to turn their backs upon it by any inconsistency, "With all lowliness." Such humility is the very opposite of haughtiness, arrogance, and conceit. "And meekness." Such a quality is not in a man's outward behavior only; or yet in his relations to his fellow-men; as little in his mere natural dispositioi Rather is it an inwrought grace ( While their mothers were attending session of the D. But let us mark tha it is the one Lord in whom we fine our unity. "One faith." A reference not to the Christian's creed but the Christian's heart, a saving liance on his one Name, a secret equally necessary and equally open for you all. "One baptism." The same God-given symbol and seal, in every case, upon the one saving faith --the same in the sacred simplicity of its Rite, in the holiness of the Triune Name (Matt. 28 : 19) named therein, and in the riches of the Covenant of which it is the initiation. God and Father of all." In these four verses the three Persons of the Godhead are referred to, one of the many passages of a similar nature in the Apostles' writings. The of all here of course refers to believers, who alone are under consideration in this chapter. "Who over all." The universe, as well the Church, lies beneath and i beneath, His throne. "And through 0f | all." He works out his will through the soul. "With longsuffering." To be them. "And in all." The word is found elsewhere in the New Testament only in Acts 21 : 8, and 2 Tim. 4:5: They are those called to a direct proclamation of the gospel. This passage would lead us to think of the evangelists as standing between the two groups (apostles and prophets, pastors and teachers), sent forth, as missionary preachers of the gospel, by the first, and as such preparing the way for the labors of the second. "And some, pastors and teachers." The two functions are regarded as coinciding and combining in the one settled guardian of a local flock; an instructive fact. "For the perfecting of the saints. ' It is quite significant that the word saint in the singular number almost curs in the New Testament-it is in the plural, saints. The divinely appointed forms of ministry are not for the sake or the glory of those exercising them, but, literally, th a view to the equipment of the nts for their work of service. "Unto the work of ministering." The saints as a body enjoy this perfecting, and as a body are prepared for this work of service, a service rendered to the ascended Lord. "Unto the -building up of the body of Christ." Any service which tears down the Church, which hinders its usefulness, which weakens its testi-money, which diverts its energies from this great divinely appointed objective, is not of God. The opening of the Tower Bridge, London, to let shipping pass, caused a total delay to road traffic of sixteen days in a recent twelve months. The bascules were raised 5,147 times.
