The electric light and power plant of the town turned in $60,000 in 1925, and in 1926 this amount was doubled, while they have ;i cash surplus of $36,789. The waterworks plant had a surplus of $693.94. This surplus is used by the town in borrowing from January until June when the town taxes come in, and in this way more money is saved for the town. The Campbellford Herald says the present situation is a tribute to the far sighted business men of that town who "builded better " they knew." There are eight reasons advanced, but there are many others, of course. However, here are eight that are very good and highly convincing as given in a southern newspaper: Newspaper reading is a universal daily habit! newspaper advertising, therefore, reaches each day virtually all who buy. Newspaper advertising is the life-blood of local trade because it touches in i ;ry munity. It gives the national advertiser the same opportunity for complete consumer appeal in any locality. Newspaper advertising cuts selling costs because it details no waste in locality of circulation. Manufacturers use it to cover markets where it is profitable to do business. Newspaper advertising insures quick, thorough, and economical dealer-distribution and dealer good-will, because retailers are willing to sell products advertised direct to their Newspaper advertising enables dealers to tell where their products may be bought. Newspaper cdvertising can be started or stepped over night, can be prepared between days to meet certain developements and to obtain immediate results. Newspaper advertising costs less than any other kind. The merchant or other, business man who is not taking advantage of the opportunities offered by newspaper advertising to boost his business now will still be facing readjustment problems when his competitor is back on a normal business plane. Port Hope Times: Charged under the Inland Revenue Act of illegally making home brew beer, Stanley and Jonas Friar were both acquitted in Police Court here to-day by Magistrate A. F. Campbell. Each pleaded not guilty and G. N. Cordon, K.C., who represented the trothers pointed out in each case to the enlightenment of the court that even though the local Customs Department had notified the Messrs. Friar that their permit to make home brew had been withdrawn no Customs Officer had this power under the Act. Mr. Gordon pointed out that in each case the accused had notified the Customs Department of his intention to make home brew and as a written permit is not issued to anyone to make home brew he held that in viewer s>\ch facts, an officer of the Customs cannot cancel a man's intentions when he makes them known in the regular manner. No evidence was brought out that any of the home brew made was for other than private consumption, and T. F. Hall, K.C., who acted for the Crown could do nothing but agree to a dismissal of both cases. WHISKERS IN SELF DEFENCE A despatch from London, England, ays: Whiskers and mustaches are oming back. Barbers say the imita-ion of men's styles and habits by 'omen is given as the direct cause. With women copying masculine fashions in haircuts, dress and smoking, proponents of the beard say it stands more than ever as a badge of masculinity and the vogue of the clean shaven man is on the decline.
