W. F. Griffis Druggist King Street Colborne With the motor traffic increasing daily, parents have need to warn their children against the danger of playing on the streets. While the motorist should endeavor to have his car under control, he can do little to avoid accident when a child suddenly darts out in front of his automobile. There is a responsibility upon the motorist to drive safely and there is also great responsibility upon the parents to enforce the rules of safety into the minds of their children. Confirmation of his appointment as Rector at Brighton, Ontario, was received by Rev. E. Slemin of Stayner, a few days ago, the change to be made on May 16th. Rev. Mr. Slemin first came to district in the Spring of 1912 when with his young bride, he was stationed as incumbent of the Duntroon parish. Here he labored for nine and a half years. He was transferred Stayner in June, 1921.--Creemore Star The covered rink proposition seems to be going over big in lots of towns. Walkerton has $12,000 subscribed for a new rink. One thousand shares at $10.00 each were sold to raise the bulk of the money. It seems only a matter of putting the shoulder to the wheel in most places and the object is complished. If you meet with an accident on the highway run your car off on to the grass or else a side road before making repairs. The new rules require that no parking be done on the highway. Petting parties might also take notice. A large deposit of silca has been found on the farm of Mr. P. Kavanagh near Bancroft. It is used in the n facture of paint, soap and steel, aild in the past considerable quantities have been shipped from the United States to the Canadian manufacturer. Millbrook citizens have decided hold their Jubilee Field Day later in the summer, in view of the demonstrations to be held in neighbouring towns on July 1st or 2nd. CANADIAN LEGION PROGRESSING RAPIDLY IN EASTERN ONTARIO Within the past two weeks new branches of the Canadian Legion have been organized at the following places: Prescott, Belleville, Brockville, Gananoque, Smiths Falls and Brighton. Other branches in the course of formation are at Campbellford, Wark-worth, Cobourg, Colborne, Bowman-ville, where organization work will be completed shortly and the branches properly started. Organization work has also been started in Eastern Ontario at Arnprior, Renfrew, Perth, Carleton Place, Napanee, Deseronto, Trenton and other places. When the organization work Is completed in these towns there will be a complete chain of Legion branches from Osh awa, east to the Quebec border. Prov. Organizer H. McLeod, who has been conducting the organization work has just returned to Prov Headquarters after a sucessful campaign ir Eastern Ontario where he addressed meetings at the aforementioned places and got branches under way. In the last few days he presented charters to the Brockville and Smiths Falls branches and conducted and installed an election of officers at the former town. The Legion has now over 100 branches in the Province of Ontario, and it is hoped to increase this number of active units to 150, the next few months. These branches have been organized since June of last year when the Ontario Command was formed. If proof were needed the progress of the Legion in Ontario, it is here furnished in the formation of these branches in the space of about ten months. With the Prov. Convention less than two weeks away, the Organizer hopes to have three more branches organized by the opening day, June 1st. He proceeds this week on a short campaign in North Western Ontario, similar to what he has conducted in the East, also in Northern Ontario, and will meeting of the Walkerton comrades with the object in view of forming another branch there. The Legion Justifies its Existence In the course of his itinerary Organizer H. McLeod has come across many men suffering from disabilities resulting from their war service, either with a very inadequate pension some cases none at all. The claims thus obtained are turned over to the Adjustment Bureau of the Legion and the adjustment machinery brought to bear on them with good results for the applicants and their dependents. A case was unearthed at Smiths Falls during the visit of the Organizer there, on May 12th, and was immediately taken up with the pension authorities at Ottawa. The boy in this enlisted at the age of 14 years and ten months. He was large of stature for his age and no doubt gave his wrong age on enlistment. In the course of events he graduated to France and was wounded in the left thigh Paschendaele. After a period of 1 pitalization was discharged m J 1918, the reason given "on account of being under age." After discharge he _iJ^rrie.d on at employment for about ""^"fifteen months at Smiths Falls, working as an engineer's fitter and helper. He then went to Detroit and found employment there. Towards the end of 1922 his old wound broke out and he went into hospital at the latter place. He spent all of his savings to provide private treatment and then taken in hand by one of the charitable organizations. No attempt -- s made by the boy or his relatives link up the disability with his service. He lay in a Detroit me year as a bed patient and in a condition to be moved was back to Smiths Falls. Upon arrival there he went to hospital and has been a patient there ever since. keep has been provided by the hard earnings of a loving sister and father. a year ago his relatives got in touch with the S. C. R. to see hat could be done in regard to treat-ent but beyond a visit from one of le Ottawa social workers from the . C. R. nothing was done as a result of her report. It is the opinion of the local physician at the hospital that : disability from which this boy now suffering is due to his war service. The poison from the old in the left thigh travelled across the body and affected the right thigh and leg and this at the present time is practically useless. The boy is now 25 years of age with no hope for the future unless his disability is traced to his war service. The adjustment bureau of the Canadian Legion is now busy with every prospect of linking this man's disability with his war service. This case is typical of many others received in this way. The Legion through its organization work is making new contracts where veterans are living in small towns or out of the way places. A good many cases reach our adjustment bureau through this channel which hitherto were not taken care of. When the Legion has linked up all the veterans from every local centre in the Province into units of the Canadian Legion, there will be few cases such as here mentioned allowed to go neglected, and with the pensions legislation which it is hoped will obtain in the near future, a great many cases will benefit by the services of the Legion and qualify for pension or hospital treatment.
