When dad had dates with maw he turned down the gas instead of stepping on it--Kitchener Record. I. S. KEYES, Express Printing Office, Colborne, issuer of Marrage Licenses. In the hope of preventing petition of the gasoline disaster which resulted in the wrecking of the home of Charles House on Douglas Drive, Toronto, and the death of three people on Saturday afternoon, E. P. Heaton Ontario Fire Marshall, is planning an educational campaign directed at the public in general. At the same time he feels there should r cessity for such a campaign, in view of the frequent warnings which have been given and the minor accidents which have resulted from the use of this inflammable liquid. One gallon of gasoline, he points out, has substantially the same explosive power as 83 pounds of dynamite, and inquiry has brought out the fact that on urday afternoon Mr. House took eral gallons to his home. "Apparently the public mind ii difficult to reach that we must make a special drive against gasoline, simplified direct campaign that will reach every person in the provii Mr. Heaton said yesterday. "The Rosedale disaster will be a warning. The pity is that the public mind should be so careless towards fire and explosion hazards that so terrible example is necessary to arouse it." Warning Broadcast Mr. Heaton added that tens of thousands of ilustrated booklets dealing with the hazards were distributed the Exhibition. Definite paragraphs dnder the heading "Do You Know?" and referring to gasoline read as fol- "That where gasoline is used for cleaning purposes it should be kept a small approved self-closing can? "That gasoline vapor is three tim heavier than air and will float n? the ground or drop to the basement like an invisible stream, and under favorable conditions will ignite from a spark or flame, "That the number of fires caused by the careless handling of gasoline anil coal oil in Ontario last year was 32C and that the loss amounted to $309, 286." 'Mr. Ceorge F. Lewis, Deputy Fire Marshall, in recalling that gasoline was three times heavier than pointed out that the fumes would find the lowest portion in : that accordingly favorable conditions in the room would bring about plosion. Ignition need not necessarily come from a spark or flame, might be caused by static. Ontario had produced a number of illustrations where gasoline explosions had occ red because rectifying process had fined the gasoline until it became ceedingly volatile. Xyol, the name £ en refined gasoline used as a solvent for rubber would ignite at 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Always Dangerous It is always dangerous to line for cleaning purposes, according to the opinion of expert chemists. They state that when it is used in washing machines in poorly ventilated rooms and basements, it is nothing short of a miracle that more explosions have not occurred. Mr. Alex. Diggins, a manufacturers' agent who represents two washing machine makers, stated he would not care to attempt to use gasoline in the machines. As he put it, the experiment might go through fifty times without astrous effects, while the n temot might result in tragedy. "You cannot put it too strongly that motor fuel should not be used for cleaning purposes," stated Mr. W. A. P. Schorman, consulting engineer for the British American Oil Company, who lives just four houses from the wrecked home. "Motor fuel is highly volatile, and when it is vaporized the volatility is much greater. The room would fill much more quickly with the fuel of the present day than in the past. This true of nearly all motor fuels used to-day." Use It Outside "A gallon of gasoline after it is vaporized and mixed with the proper unt of air or oxygen, would pro-: a force, if confined, about equal 0 sticks of dynamite," Mr. Schor-added. "Three sticks of dyna-. confined in a- bomfh, would be sufficient to do about the same dam-as was done in the explosion on Saturday. The only safe way "where cleaning has to he done, is for people do it out or doors, where there is ficient air to carry away the gas which escapes from the cleaning I fluid." I In view of the fact that a great manv of the homes in the city have gasoline in small quantities, Hon. W. II. Price, Attorney-General, stated the Government would do everything in its nower in the interests of safety, though the situation was already fully covered by civic by-laws. TV>e Insurance Act forbids keeping gasoline in a house in any quantity greater than a quart. It must also be safely contained, or tl company disclaims all liability.
