McLaughlin, cheese maker at Sidney Town Hall Factory, won the sweepstakes for 'Eastern Ontario and had the highest percentage of specials and first grade cheese. Out of 3000 chese for the season, 350 graded specials and balance firsts. Won the Instructors' and Cheesemakers' silver trophy, the first prize cash award of the Eastern Ontario Dairymen's Association, the J. B. Ford, The Western Salt Co., The Lawrence Dairy Supply C„ and the A. B. S. Barnekow Special prizes. Mr. McLaughlin is father of Mrs. W. E. Otto, Colborne. Hugh Honey, Dairy Instructor of the Belleville district, won the first place among the thirty instructors of Eastern Ontario Division with the1 percentage of 96.60 of first grade cheese and was presented the Silver Trophy donated by Hon. Jno. S. Martin, Minister of Agriculture for Ontario. This trophy was offered for competition among Instructors from whose district the highest percentage of high scoring cheese, firsts and specials is reported. The impressive and beautiful Ceremonies of Installation and Investiture of the Order of the Eastern Star were conducted in the Town Hall, Colborne, on Tuesday evening, January 10th, 1928, when the officers of Colborne Chapter, No. 82, were installed and invested for the ensuing year. |Mrs. Jessie Dudley of Colborne, District Deputy Grand Matron of District No. 12, was chief installing officer. She was ably assisted by Mrs. Taylor, Past Grand Electa, and by Mrs. Annie Boyd of Belleville. Grand /Marshall of Grand Chapter, Mr. E. T. Cherry. P.W.P., of Belleville, as Grand Patron, Mrs. Norma Fowler, P. W.M., of Colborne, as Grand Chaplain, Mrs. James Reid of Belleville as Grand Organist. The Patrol of Belleville Chapter. No. 55, assisted in the ceremonies, and under the direction of Mrs. Annie Boyd, Grand Marshall, the intricate movements of the drills were exemplified in a splendid manner, and proved very interesting to the members of the Order and particularly to the large number of invited non-members who were present. There were visitors from Belleville. Trenton, Brighton and other places. Just before the close of the proceedings a number of presentations were made to the grand officers, and to retiring and incoming officers in behalf of Colborne Chapter. The installing officer. Mrs. Jessie Dudley was presented with silver salt and pepper shakers, the presentation address being made by Mrs. Kathleen Scripture; to Mrs. R. Gordon: to Mrs. Annie Boyd, Grand Marshall, a silver sandwich dish, by Mr. Douglas W- I' COLBORNE COUNCIL The statutory organization meeting of Colborne Council for 1928 was held Monday morning, Jan. 9th. Mr. C. M. Finkle. as Reeve, and Messrs. W. J. Cowie. B. H. Coyle, F.C. Morrow and W. A. Seed as Councillors, severally subscribed to the Declaration of Office, and forthwith proceeded to dispatch the business. Communications read included: iFrom County Treasurer, receipt for payment of 1927 Counties levies--$27-CO.OO--Filed. From Hospital for Sick Children, quest for donation. Grant of $5 made. From Ontario Good Roads Association, requesting membership for the year at $5.00--Filed.' From J. T. Gordon and E. M. Broom-field, applying for positions of auditors.--Granted. From Liquor Control Board, notifying that it would be necessary for municipality to appoint an enforcement officer under the L.C. A. in order to retain fines recovered. From Dr. J. Archer Brown, Medical Officer of Health, his report upon the sanitary condition of the town for year ending -Oct. 31st, 1927. There were 16 births, and 14 deaths--one death was that of a tourist who died in his auto of heart disease. 20 cases of comimunicable diseases were reported, but no deaths among these. The M.O.H. recommended "that a milk by-law should be passed in order to keep control and supervision of j the milk supplied in the municipality." Action on the above was deferred until next meeting. On motion of Messrs. His Honour Judge Deroche of Belleville presided at the sittings of the Division Court, held in Colborne last Mr. G. E. Drewry of Brighton and Mr. A. Cochrane of Cobourg attended Division Court, professionally, at Colborne last Tuesday. Miss Gertrude Coffey of Toronto accompanied by her friend, Miss Eva Lawrence of North Bay, spent Christmas with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Coffey. Capt. and Mrs. James H. Peacock of Port Hope, and their daughter, Mrs. R. J. Clarke of Colborne, are leaving to-day for West Palm Beach, Florida, where they intend spending about two months. Mr. and Mrs. Delbert D. M. Peebles and son, Frederick, have returned home from Rochester, N.Y., after having spent two weeks, including Christmas and New Year's at his uncles', Fred and Geo. Coffeen's. COMING EVENTS THE LATE MRS GEO. JOHNSTONE Mrs. Johnstone, widow of the late George Johnstone, died at her residence, Green St., Cobourg, on Thursday, Jan. 5th, 1928, in her 79th year. Until four years ago she resided at the family homestead in Vernonville. Deceased was of a bright and cheerful I disposition and remained hopeful to1 the end. She is survived by two sons, Mr. James Johnstone of Cobourg, Dr. H. B. Johnstone of Fenelon Falls, and two daughters. Miss Esther Johnstone and Mrs. Coulter of New York, and four grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her twenty-four years ago. The funeral which was attended by many old friends and relatives, took place on Monday, Jan. 9th. The services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Boyle of St. Peter's Church, Cobourg. The remains were interred in the family plot at Vernonville. t Much sympathy is extended to the sorrowing family in their loss of a devoted and beloved mother. Coin See page On Monday, Jan. 2nd, 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Honeywell, of Haldimand township, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage at their home, near Baltimore. On January 2nd, 1878, Amos Honeywell and Margaret Ann Cochrane, both of Haldimand township, were united in marriage by Rev. Mr. McKay at what has been their home ever since. They have two children, Mrs. H. A. Johns of Port Hope, and Mr. George Honeywell of Haldimand township, both of whom, with their families, were present at the celebration on Monday. The bridesmaid of fifty years ago was Miss Bella Cochrane, who was also present, but Mr. Honeywell, a brother of the groom, who'was best man,' is now residing in the United States and was unable to be present. In the afternoon a gathering of old friends and relatives of the couple was held, when an address and a purse was presented by members of the family, while - in the evening close to one hundred younger friends and members of the family were present, when Mr. W. J. Jibb, on behalf of the neighbours and friends, presented them with a purse of- gold and an address, this being followed by dancing and cards. There was also step-dancing by Mr. Montgomery, broom dancing by Walter Leech, a golden wedding song by two grandchildren, Grace and Eilly Honeywell. Charleston Dance by Miss Gilliland and Miss Honeywell, a comic song by Billy Honeywell, followed by Auld Lang Syne to wind up the evening. In the afternoon there were several baptisms of younger members of the third generation, the ceremony of fifty_ years ago being repeated under' a nicely decorated arch.
