EDWARDS' RED, WHITE and BLUE SERVICE STATION COLBORNE DISTRICT ORATORY CONTEST As Others Reported It Contest, held in Victoria Opera House, Cobourg, Friday evening. March 9th. 1928, the Cobourg World Miss Beatrice Purdy To this young representative from Colborne High chool, was accorded the honour of giving the oration that won the cup. Her manner upon the platform was very modest and unassuming, her enuniciation and delivery excellent, and her subject matter all that could be desired. Not alone did she stress material things, but refer-also to those greater attributes jus for cipal I lAt the conclusion of the contest these young people were called to the platform, and the medals were presented by Mr. Morrison, Mr. G. E. Kennedy, Principal of the Colborne High School, was also called to the platform and presented with the silver cup, which Colborne School will hold for the coming year. In acknowledging his gratification in the marked success of one of his pupils, he paid tribute to his assistant in the school. Miss Mitchell, teacher of English. Encouraging Sign Every now and then the remark is heard that public speaking is not up to the standard of a quarter of a century ago or longer. The inference is, that the world to-day is such a busy-place, that men do not take the time to perfect themselves in the art, as they did formerly. If these things are true, it certainly is an encouraging sign that our Secondary Schools and Collegiate Institutes are taking so keen an interest in training the young people in public speaking. The awarding of a cup in each district adds to the interest taken in this, and the zeal shown by schools to secure this coveted trophy for their own place of instruction, is commendable. . iln View of the deep interest taken" by the staffs of the Schools from Pickering on the west to Brighton on the east, it certainly was gratifying on Friday night to see the interet shown by the people of Cobourg and district, in turning out in such large numiber, notwithstanding blocked roads and adverse weather conditions. Had the night been fine it is doubtful if Victoria Opera House would have accommodated all. SHINGLES CARLOAD OF SHINGLES TO BE SOLD AT BARGAIN PRICES FOR 15 DAYS. J. C.
