DetailsRaising a new barn in the 19th century was a mammoth undertaking for farmers. Family, friends, and neighbours from the community gathered together to carry out this task and completed the construction within days. It was an event for the community and a welcome sign of prosperity and future hopes.
Barns provided much needed protection from the challenges of Canadian weather, shielding animals, feed, equipment, and tools. Sturdy stone foundations supported the large timber post and beam framing. The barns were extremely well made and designed, a testament to the skills of these fine craftsmen. Today some old barns have been converted into homes and many architects draw inspiration from historic barns in the design of contemporary homes.
