Mrs. McMillan and two daughters lately motored down from Cobourg and made a short visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Mutton. Mr. Fred Spafford, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Spafford and daughter Ruth, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Aikens and twin daughters Jean and June, all of Sidney, recently visited Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Dunnett. Some farmers in this vicinity find the task of separating the milk a burden, and their wives and daughters ,ot take kindly to the washing daily of the numerous pieces of sep-or, so some are sending their cans i:lk to the Hilton Cheese factory, Mr. Archie Samons runs his motor truck there every morning. Poultry raisers in this place have been greatly troubled this season by numerous skunks, and when one took up residence in Mr. M. Dudley's cellar, he promptly treated it to a poisoned egg. Then number two was discovered enjoying life on the lawn he dispatched that with his gun. And when he accidently came across mother skunk and her family of six nearly full grown out for an evening stroll in the direction of the children coops, he seized a club and killed the whole seven. During the past two months over $1,000 has been collected by the town in breach of the Ontario Temperance " ct cases. This means about half mill on the town's taxes. Mr. Ben Ewing, of Brighton, visit-I his nephew^, Mr. Ben Ewing, Park street, this week. Mr. Ewing, who will be 86 years of age in August, is remarkably spry for his age, and is very clever checker player. July 5 was the last day on which ie 5 per cent, penalty could be sav-l on the payment of town taxes, and i to that date Tax Collector Smith ul received about $60,000 in taxes. This is more than half of the first in- town council received word from the provincial secretary's department that it was illegal for the council to pass a by-law to exempt taxation for a term of years houses built in 1921. The council considering this step to overcome the shortage of houses in Cobourg. On Wednesday last Frank Bates, rnployed by Ben Mallory, Front Road East, was prostrated by the extreme while pitching hay in a field. >on as he complained of feeling faint Mr. Mallory started with him for the house, but the young man lapsed into unconsciousness before reached the hou&er and passed ay on Thursday evening. Deceas-was 28 years of age, and was bom in England. Tilt death occurred Wednesday at the home of her nephew, Mr. Thos Cann, Havelock street, of Miss Elizabeth Toms, an old resident of Cobourg. Deceased was born in Cornwall, England, and had been a resident of Cobourg for the past thirty years. She was of a retiring disposition, and a member of St. Peter's church. Interment will be held in gt. Peter's cemetery. In police court on Saturday last Provincial Constable Robert Smith, of Port Hope, was fined $350 and costs by P.M. Floyd on complaint of Chief Ruse for having liquor other than in his own private residence.
