THE COLBORNE EXPRESS, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3rd, 1957 $2.00 a year in advance--$3.00 to U.S.A. MRS. BURTON BRINTNELL At Trenton Memorial Hospital, on Sunday, September 22nd, 1957, Mrs. Burton E. Brintnell entered into rest. She had a diabetic condition for some years, Which had suddenly become much worse. She was born May 16th, 1882, in Cramahe Township, Franey Iva Waite, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Waite (nee Victoria Bellyou). She attended Edviille School and resided in that neighbourhood until her marriage September 28th, 1904, to Mr. Burton E. Brintnell. After her marriage she lived in Rochester, N.Y. for five years, coming back to Brighton, where she had since resided. She was a life-long devoted member of the United (formerly Methodist) Church, for the past fifty years she was a member of the Brighton United Church. An active worker in Group Two of the Woman's Association. She is survived by her husband, of Brighton, one daughter Bernadine (Mrs. Frank Strong), three sons, Donald, Kingsley and Ivison, and four grandchildren. Mrs. Brintnell rested at the K. Snider Funeral Home, Brighton, •where funeral service was held Wednesday, September 25th, at 2.30 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. K. Edmondson. There was a large attendance at this service. The pallbearers were Messrs. Van Waite, Gerald Waite, Gilbert Waite, Kenneth Mutton, Raymond Cooper, Hubert Cooper. The many beautiful floral tributes were carried by Messrs. Victor Chapman, Edwin Nestoitt, J. Hennessy. Stanley Thompson, George Ellery, Hedley Ireland. Interment Zion Cemetery (Waites), Edville. SOUTH CRAMAHE TWP. WELLINGTON WEDDING OF LOCAL INTEREST BAPTIST CHURCH MISSION CIRCLE The October meeting of Colborne Baptist Church Mission Circle wash held Tuesday afternoon of this week at the home of Mrs. George Smith. Vice^Presictemt, Mrs. Charles Teal, presided. The Scripture reading, John 15 : 1-8, and verse 16 was read by Mrs. Teal, who al«o read a poem entitled "Our Fulfilment". The hymn "Fight the Good Fight" was sung followed by prayer by Mrs. Teal. Psalm 103 was read responsively. In the absence of the Secretary, Mrs. S. Haynes, Mrs. A. Morton read the minutes. Roll call was answered by a favourite verse of Scripture. During the business session it was announced that the Baptist Women's Day of Prayer will be Friday, December 6th. The November meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. William Squires, King Street West. A vote of thanks was given to the hostess and those who were taking part. Mrs. Teal conducted the Devotional Period, reading "Adventures With God" by Jean Scott, the theme "Judge Justly". The hymn "I Need Thee Every Hour" was sung. Mrs. Levi Dudley led the Prayer Session, which closed with repeating the Lord's Prayer in unison. The program topic entitled "Medical Work (in India" was prepared and ably given by Mrs. A. E. Dingman. Mrs. Teal read a poem "Thanksgiving". The meeting concluded with the Mizpah Benediction. The Ladies' Aid Work Convener, Mrs. D. Hetherington, presided. The hostess served delicious refreshments. PRESENTED WITH LEADERSHIP AWARD At the 4-H Club Achievement Day held at Brighton, Mrs. J. Deviney of Wlcklow-Vernonville Club, was presented with a leadership award by the Canadian Council on 4-H Clutos in recognition of her ten years of service as a club leader. Mrs. Deviney expressed her appreciation and stated that she has received satisfaction from doing the work and seeing the progress and appreciation by the girls. GROUND OBSERVER CORPS NEWS A conference which brought together all Chief Observers and Regional Supervises in the Area was held on Sunday, September 22nd, in South Bend Hotel, Young's Point, at 10 a.m. F/L W. S. E. Wood, 54 Ground Observer Corps Detachment, Peterborough, welcomed the group and called upon F/L Renaud, CD. from 5 Ground Observer Corps Unit, North Bay, to speak on future planning, operations, etc. F/O George Carruthers outlined operational standardization, which covered reporting procedures and what type of aircraft to report to the Filter Centre, while Mr. Clare Keevil, Claremont, gave a brief outline of publicity and advertising now being used by the Detachment. At 11:45 a.m. the group broke up for lunch and reconvened at 1:15 p.m. for discussion period and questions and answers. After lunch the Field Officers outlined future training, etc. I Among those in atetndance were j Mr. and Mrs. Winston Packard and Miss Enid Rogers from Colborne. On Saturday afternoon, September 28th, 1957, in the Wellington United Church Parsonage, Marilyn Lillian, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Sutton, Colborne, was united in marriage to Mr. Edward D. Sanderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Sanderson, London, Ontario. Rev. Alfred Poulter officiated. Given in marriage by her father, the bride was charmingly attired in a waltz length dress of ice blue crys-ftalette, matching jacket with lily pointed sleeves, feathered headdress, hand bouquet of white 'mums and stephanotis. She was attended by Miss Dorothy Farrell, Toronto, who wore a street length dress of Empire blue satin, matching feathered headdress, corsage of red rosebuds. The groomsman was Mr. Carman Darling of London, Ontario. Immediately following the ceremony, the forty guests attended the reception at Maple Inn, Bloomfield, where they were received by the Bridal Party. The bride's mother wore an olive green dress with brown accessories and a corsage of talisman roses. The groom's mother was attired in a black crepe gown, matching accessories and corsage of baby 'mums. The couple left on a motor trip to Western Ontaraio and the United States. The bride travelled in a lime green sheath dress, matching top coat and accessories, corsage of bronze rose buds. On their return they will reside at Wellington. Those in attendance from Colborne were: Mrs. W. W. D. McGlennon, Mrs. E. O. Coyle, Mrs. Norman Shel-drick, Mr. Charles Wood, Mrs. John Lynn, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Learmonth, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert McLaughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Griffith, Messrs. Jack and Joe Persofsky. PAST MATRONS' CLUB The September meeting of the Past Matrons' Club of Colborne Chapter No. 82 O.E.S., was held last Monday evening at the home of Mrs. H. A. Free. The President, Mrs. A. O. May-bee presided. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. E. C. Brown, Secretary; Mrs. O. L. Morrow gave the Treasurer's report. Several matters of business were dealt with. Members were happy to have Mrs. A. J. Dive present after missing several meetings. There was one visitor present, Mrs. E. Hargrea-ves, who is a Past Matron of Evergreen Chapter O.E.S., Fort Francis, Ont. She is a Charter member of that Chapter and has a Life Membership. Court Whist was played. Mrs. O. L. Morrow and Mrs. B. Smith gaining the high scores. The next meeting will be held in Brighton at the home of Mrs. Gerald Solomon. ANGLICAN CHURCH W. A. ANNUAL CONFERENCE The Annual Conference of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Anglican Church in Canada, in the Durham-Northumberland Deanery was held in St. John's Church, Harwood, Thursday, September 26th, 1957. Holy Communion and Sermon, Celebrant, Key. David Stiles, Rector, assisted by Rev. Canan H. M. Bedford-Jones.. Afternoon session in Community Hall. Opening remarks by Mrs. H. Sirett for Deanery W. A. President, as Mrs. Keating was away. Welcome St. John's by Mrs. Shearer, W.A. Pres. Missionary address by Miss Doris Tobias, ChoK3hol, Chile. Address by Diosecan Board Representative, Mrs. M. P. Wilkinson, Officer-at-large. Mrs. Fallis of St. Thomas W.A., Millbrook, is the incoming President. The 36th Conference will be held at Newcastle. Benediction, Rev. Canon H. M. Bedford-Jones, Rural Dean. Delegates from Colborne were: Mrs. Sheldrick, Mrs. Connors, Mrs. Cooke, Mrs. Barr, Mrs. Strang. A most informative and enjoyable day was had by all. Delicious refreshments were served by the ladies of St. John's Parish, Harwood. LOCAL RESIDENT TAKES ANNUAL DI.P On Sunday, July 22nd, 1956, Mr. Tom Cuthtoert was assisting Mr. Ivan Flanders launch his fine new boat "The Thing" at Lakeport, when he fell off the boat, fully clothed, including his wallet, .all got a good wetting. History repeated itself for Tom on Sunday, September 22nd. This time he was boating just north of Kingston when he was anchoring a boat and fell into the water. He had to borrow dry clothes from his son Ronald to come home. That was well, but they were a little tight in places for "Pa". OLD ST. RALLY DAY SERVICE SALEM UNITED CHURCH Rally Day was observed at Salem United Church on Sunday afternoon, September 29th, at 2.15 p.m. The front of the Church was decorated with baskets of beautiful gladioli. The junior choir, under the leadership of Miss Dixie Brown, supplied the music and sang the selection "Bringing In the Sheaves". The Scripture Lesson was read by Lenore WhJaley and Car-oly Chatterson and Gene Woods and Richard Whaley received the offering-. Rev. F. W. Taylor told a story to interest the young members of the congregation and concluded with a short sermon for the adults. It is worthy of note to say that we had an interesting 'personality at our Rally Day Service on Sunday in the person of Miss Edna Jacques, the poetess. COBOURG PRESBYTERY MEETS AT BALTIMORE On Tuesday, September 24th, the Cobourg Presbytery of the United Church met in the Baltimore United Church with an attendance of about fifty ministers and laymen. The Rev. A. L. Sisco of Warkworth, retiring Chairman presented the gavel to the incoming Chairman, Rev. A. H. Harding of Welcome, who opened the court for the transaction of business. Rev. J. S. Bryson of Canton conducted the Worship Service. Rev. D. M. Smith of Campbellford was elected Secretary to fill the vacancy left by the removal of Rev. P. J. Homersen of Brighton to St. John's, Newfoundland. Two new ministsers, received into the Presbytery since last meeting, Rev. N. O. Hanna of Gore's Landing and Rev. J. S. Bryson of Canton, were welcomed by the Chairman and presented to the court. Rev. C. Clarke of Frankford has been appointed Chaplain to Guelph Reformatory and will leave shortly to take up his new work. He will be succeeded at Frank ford toy Rev. T. J. Riddall from Ireland, who will serve as stated supply until next Conference. Rev. E. C. Kelloway of Cobourg presented the report of the Missionary Maintenance Committee and introduced the special speaker of the day, Rev. T. V. Mooney, Treasurer of the United Church of Canada. In the absence of Rev. K. Cronk of Port Hope, Rev. J. E. Griffith of Castleton gave the Evangelism and Social Service Report. Attention was directed to the results of the recent liquor vote in Haldimand Township which resulted in a victory for the Temperance forces. Rev. T. B. Asbell of Grafton, who headed up the Citizen's Committee, spoke on the campaign and was congratulated upon his good work. Rev. F. W. Taylor, Colborne, presented the report of the Information and Stewardship Committee. As religious 'broadcasting is one of the concerns of this Committee reference was made to the Interdenominational Devotional broadcasts each morning Tuesday-Friday over the Port Hope-Cobourg Radio Station OHUC. The Committee has had some share in the initiation of these "broadcasts. Other outlets tor United Church broadea^s are being sought in the Presbytery and throughout the Conference. The United Church Calendar for 1958 is now available. Ministers and Charges were urged to procure their supplies for early distribution. When the matter of reporting Presbytery meetings was brought up, Rev. F. W. Taylor was elected Presbytery Press Reporter. Dr. Allen Knight, Agricultural Missionary in Angola, Africa, is to be in the Presbytery on October 8 and 9 and will speak in Trinity Church Hall, Cobourg on Tuesday and in Warkworth United Church on Wednesday evening. j MORGANSTON W.A. j The Woman's Association of the Morganston United Church held their meeting Thursday afternoon, September 19th, at the home of Mrs. John Davidson, with a good attendance. The President, Mrs. George, opened the meeting with the Theme and Creed. Hymn 181, followed by the Lord's Prayer in unison. Mrs. Clayton Bradley, Devotional Leader, presided for this period. Her topic was "Christian Responsibility". Scripture reading, Mrs. H. Fitchett. Hymn 81. Reading, Mrs. Wm. Davidson. Prayer by Mrs. Bradley closed this part of the meeting. Mrs. George presided for the business session. Roll call answered by each member paying 25c. Mrs. Earl Redden, Secretary, gave the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved. Mrs. C. Bray gave the Treasurer's report. The Anniversary to be held October 13th, services 11 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. Mrs. C. MeMann passed the Birthday 'Box. "Happy Birthday" was sung for a couple of members whose birthdays were this month, i.e.: Mrs. H. George and Mrs. Harold Fitchett. Mrs. H. Doidge presented the following program. Hymn 64, 1st and 2nd verses. Reading, Mrs. R. Robson; solo, Mrs. Campbell; reading, Mrs. L. MeComb; sing-song, Mrs. L. Darling; contest, Mrs. Doidge; hymn 63, two verses: Mrs. B. Fitchett thanked the hostess for entertaining the Society. The October meeting is to be held at the home of Mrs. Wm. Davidson. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction. HINMAN CELEBRATES 80th BIRTHDAY COLBORNE ROTARY CLUB Rotary Club met at the Queen's Hotel at the usual hour of 6.30 on Monday. The President, John lies presided. There were 16 present. Plans and discussion of the October draw took up some of the business session. Result of the sale of tickets at the various Fall Fairs was reported toy the Chairman, Ed. Rimmer. Bruce Spencer won the weekly draw. It was Jas. Chapin's night and he introduced Ro-tarian OsSie Newton of Trenton as guest speaker. Ossie gave a very entertaining and enlightening talk on his recent trip to the International Rotary Convention at Lucerene, Switzerland. He spent two months abroad and travelled a great deal and visited various Rotary Clubs. Cleve Hauser ?blv thanked Mr. Newton. Meeting cdjourned at 8 p.m. The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Whitehouse was the scene of a happy occasion Friday evening, September 28th, when a large number of Mrs. Ed. Hinman's relatives, friends, and her Edville neighbours assembled to mark her 80th toirthday anniversary. She received many toeautiful and useful gifts and lovely cards. To ellimax the social and enjoyable evening delicious refreshments were served. An appropriately decorated birthday cake was served. "Happy Birthday" was sung to the guest of honour. Mrs. Hinman expressed her gratitude at being so well remembered. With those present were her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Robinson, Montreal, and her cousin, Miss M. Pratt, Toronto. The Colborne Express wishes Mrs. Hinman continued health to enjoy more birthdays. PETER DAVIS BREAKS JUMP RECORD At the Cobourg Collegiate Institute Field Day held Friday, September 27, Peter Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Davis, Colborne, won two gold medals. He was first in the Running Broad Jump, first in the Hop, Skip and Jump. He broke the record in the Junior Section in the Running Broad Jump (14') by 11". SHILOH W. A. The September meeting of Shiloh Woman's Association was held Thursday evening, the 26th, at the home of the President, Miss Nellie Mutton. There were nine members and two visitors present. The meeting opened with quiet music followed toy a poem "This I Know", by the President. Worship Period was in charge of Mrs. C. J. Mutton and opened with hymn 373, "Jesus United by Thy Items from a Bulletin sent from W. A. Headquarters. Toronto, were read and discussed. Grace". Bible readings were from Matthew 25: 31-46, and Romans 15: 1-7. The topic and a story from the "Observer" were very interesting. Minutes were read and approved. Several items of business were discussed. Next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. W. W. Mutton, Oct. 24th, at 2.30 p.m. Mrs. Lawrence Mutton showed coloured pictures taken during her vacation in England. A social evening is being planned for November, at which Mrs. Mutton will show these very interesting and colourful pictures. Meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction. Lunch was served by the hostess and lunch committee. JUNIOR BALL TEAMS ENJOY CORN ROAST At the Packard Farm, Dundonald the Colborne Junior Baseball Teams were entertained at a corn roast, with marshmallows and chocolate milk on Friday evening, September 27th. Some parents were also present. Mr. Bernard Fox donated the marshmallows and butter, Mr. Harold Hoskin the corn, Mr. Bruce Spencer the chocolate milk, the wood for the huge bon-fire was supplied by the Packards. The teams and their managers wish to thank all who helped to make this an enjoyable event. HONOURED BY FAMILY Mr. and Mrs. Keith Redner were pleasantly surprised on Sunday, September 29th, when the immediate members of their family presented them with a beautiful Silver Tea Service. Mr. and Mrs. Redner will be married twenty-five years on Friday, October 4th. Congratulations with best wishes for many more years of wedded bliss. It is unfair to require attendance of boys and girls at athletic practices on Sundays when these interfere with church and Sunday School. Youngsters should not be confronted with a choice between one or the other, according to the Lord's Day Alliance. Canadian stocks of frozen fish at the beginning of 1956 amounted to 38,441,000 pounds. COMING EVENTS Brighton Horticultural Society are holding an interesting Public Meeting in Brighton Town Hall on Thursday Evening, October 17th, at 8 .m. John F. Clark, Assistant Director of Ontario Dept. Agriculture and Horticulture, will deliver his Illustrated Lecture on "A Trip to the Orient". This is an outstanding lecture and should not toe missed.
