Colborne United Church W.M.S. The regular monthly meeting of the W.M.S. was held at the home of Mrs. E. W. Rowsome on Thursday afternoon, February 5th. Mrs. Taylor opened the meeting with a quotation from Charles Kingsley followed by the singing of the hymn, "O for a faith that will not shrink" and prayer. Arrangements w"ere made for the World Day of Prayer Service to be held in the United Church on Friday, February 13th. The theme of the worship service under the leadership of Mrs. Gordon was, "Race Petrjudice Exposed." Mrs. Gordon opened the worship service with a Call to Worship. God is no respecter of persons; but in every nation he that feareth Him and worketh righteousness is. accepted with Him. Whoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. Mrs. Mills read the scripture lesson Ruth 1, 1-18, 14-17. The nations of Israel because of their training and environment had very narrow nationalistic policies. They considered all strangers as enemies. As a protest against such an attitude some unknown author wrote the beauiful story contained in the Book of Ruth, showing how Ruth, a Moabite, one of a particularly hated race became the wife of a highly respected Jew and was the great-grandmother of King David, the national hero-- a strong argument against race prejudice. The program was conducted by Mrs. Quinn assisted by Mrs. Roy Graham and Mrs. Pacey. The theme was, "The Canadian Indian". Following are some of the facts which were given us. There are 2000 Indian reserves in Canada and about 153,000 Indians. The Indians are slow to change and so do not readily adjust to the ways of the whites. Here the church has a part to play in bringing the different races together in order to create better mutual understanding. Any capable Indian may apply for the franchise the same other Canadain or a whole may apply. Many Indians are leaving the reserves and moving into specialized fields. Welfare benefits such as old age pensions and childrens allowances are available for them as well as for other Canadians. In the field of education where there are no public schools, residential schools are still maintained. In some public schools Indian and white children attend. Mrs. Graham read one of Pauline Johnston's poems. Thanks was extended to our hostess for sharing her home with us and also to the committee who served the delicious lunch. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction. Change Of Date Please take note that the Euchre and Bridge, sponsored by the Colborne Chapter,No. 82 O.E.S. which was • to be held on February 20th in the Masonic Temple, Brighton has been changed to February 27th. Greenly, in a reading tithing, commented that "Real religion presupposes righteousness and generosity...... tithing is God's way, and those who put God in their budget find Him nearer in their lives. The poor are more generous than the rich, and the rich receives much of our Lord's pity when he was here on earth." Mrs. C. Nelson, for Christian Citizenship, read a paper on the evils of social drinking, describing the gradual deterioration of the drinking individual. Worship on the subject of Brotherhood, was conducted by Mrs. Haynes and opened with the hymn, "These Things Shall Be" and with prayer. Mrs. W. Day read the Scripture, from the book of Ruth, and Mrs. W. Nelson in a comment on the passage pointed out that it is a story of love against a background of religious and racial intolerence. Mrs. R. Lawson led the study group with an engrossing discussion on "Our Indian Neighbours". Numerically, of seventeen millions of people in Canada, one hundred and fifty three thousand are Indians. The Church, in its task of communicating Christ, meets many problems. One is personality differences, and though processes which, originating deep in the past, have always centred on being, or existing, rather than on 'becoming' or progressing. The Indian accepts change slowly. Legal problems' also have hampered relations with them, and have deterred the intergration of the race into nation, community and church life. Advancement has been made, in „the appointment of placement officers, who' *re endeavouring to choose suitable Indian youths for for special education and employment, in enlarging the ministerial, missionary and hospital staffs, and by both races, who are slowly learning the art neighbouring. Lunch was served by Mrs. H. I. Allen, and Mrs. W. Covert. The March meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Haynes. United Church Hustlers Auxiliary Mrs. J. Further Plans were made for the Valentine Tea and Tiny Tot Fashion Parade to be held on Saturday, February 14th. Mrs. F.
