From what I have seen of international (unions, I don't care for them. If the International Wooirworkers of America is dominated in the USA by Hoffa types, then all my prejudices come into play against them. Aside from that, it is a long way from Winnipeg, where I write, to the logging camps of Newfoundland, where the fighting is. So I ought to be slow to judge. JSTevertheless, I feel completely sure about one thing; Justice Minister Davie Fulton was dead wrong Ing it upon himself to refuse reinforcements to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police over the head of the RCMP's chief commissioner, Mr. H. Nicholson- -- and Nicholoson did the right thing by resigning in protest. After all, one Mountie had already been killed, and to deny reinforcements to those on the spot, tharged with keeping order, would have been a blemish on an honourable career. I am sure Nicholson will hever regret having given up job and a logging camp in the dead of a cold pension in order to act in accordance with his conscience. I am equally sure that Davie Fultoa will regret his act. For a short time, it may appear to have been a popular decision from a political point of view. After all, Joey Smallwood is a Liberal. Further, the so-called "million-member" Canadian Labor Congress will praise Mr. Fulton as a supporter of organized labor, as a champion of the under-dog. But Smallwood is not alone in his fight against the IWA. The entire legislature of Newfoundland feel as he does. Countless members of the million-member Canadian Labor Congress, too, if given a chance to vote secretly, would favour his action. After all, the strike had been going on a long time, and the violence had been all too apparent, before Small-wood and the government of Newfoundland got fed up with it, and acted in righteous anger. If Davie Fulton was forced out of winter night in his night-gown, and forced to stay out, he'd be. quick to holler for RCMP protection. He (wouldn't care, then, whether a million-member CLC was supporting the IWA or not. But he, too, is a long way from Newfoundland. Perhaps no one, far from the scene, can know the rights and wrongs of the dispute over wages; but we all should certainly know that where there is violence and murder, police are needed, and reinforcements should not have been denied them. To do so was an act of folly. Time will prove it to be so.
