COLBORNE ROTARY CLUB The regular meeting of the Rotary Club was held at six-thirty Monday evening in the Queen's Hotel, with past president Delbert McLaughlin in the chair. John Best informed the club that it would be expected to take some part arranging a celebration for Coronation Day. This and some other bus-5 was left over for the executive to deal with at its next meeting. The special speaker, Senior Major of the Salvation Army Harold Corbett of Cobourg was introduced by Chas. Wood. Major Corbett who has spent some years in India, gave a clear and enlightening talk on- the caste system which divides the people into three distinct classes. Each village is divided into three sections. The Brahamas or higher caste will not step over the line into a lower caste section and a lower caste may not enter into a higher section unless he is called. Among the lower castes, life is unsanitary, filthy and degrading, making it exceedingly difficult for the missionary to do any effective work. Redvers Brown moved the vote of thanks. Leonard Gordon won a fine set of gardening tools in the weekly draw. There were two visitors from Cobourg, Rotarians Russel Manning and Bill Peace. If you haven't sent your pink envelope in, do it now. MISSIONARY CONFERENCE AT UNITED MISSIONARY CHURCH The United Missionary Church concluded their Missionary Convention on Sunday evening, with splendid attendance throughout the services. Miss Yeo of Nigeria, Africa, opened the Convention by her challenging message on Friday evening, accompanied by her interesting slides on the work being done in her area. She put special emphasis on the wonderful work being done by the doctors and nurses of the United Missionary Church in the 40-bed hospital in Nigeria. There are now three doctors of our denomination at work in our hospital. Hundreds of souls are being led to accept Christ as their personal Saviour through their efficient work, and their opportunity to witness to these needy black hearts. Saturday afternoon Miss Yeo addressed the W.M.S. of the Church, emphasizing the need of prayer and the great work being done by our societies throughout Canada and the United States. She also stated how much the refrigerators provided by the U. M. Church W.M.S. societies are appreciated in the hot season. Her special prayer request was for the natives who are going out into new areas to evangelize during the month of April. Also she urged us to help them pray for 50 full time native ministers to go into Christian service out; of the four Bible Schools which are being conducted by our teachers on foreign soil. We now have nearly fifty missionaries in Nigeria, alone, supported by the U. M. Church. The majority of these are teachers, nurses and doctors who have left opportunities to make good money here in the homeland, to tell these who have never heard about the good news of Jesus Christ and His power to break the chains of sin and vile habits, and give new life and peace. Sunday morning, Mrs. Brebacher, a former school teacher here in Ontario, brought us a message of the great need, and the miles of territory allotted to the United Missionary Cii^ivL not yet touched She told of many*frue incidents of actual life on the foreign field. The Convention closed on Sunday night as Miss Yeo brought the final message. Each of urged to give of our best to the Master, and everyone present received a blessing. A total offering of $97.00 was raised during the Convention, and $70.00 donated directly to Missions. FIRST COLBORNE SCOUT TROOP Meetings, March-April, 1953 No meeting, April 3. Friday, March 27.
