Cobourg BROWN'S CORNERS January 17th, 1955. Wilfred Sheppard, Toronto, and Jack Metcalf, Milliken, were home over the weekend. Mrs. Geo. Fish held a wear-ever torush demonstration at her home last Wed. afternoon, with nine of the local ladies in attendance. Mr. Bruce Jackson and Mr. Fred Heagle attended district Lodge and banquet in Brighton Tuesday last. Mr. Lewis Vanwicklin and Mr. and Mrs. James Sheppard and Linda called on Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Jackson on Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. S. Burbridge were Thursday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Smith. Mrs. Elmer Whittaker spent; the weekend in Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Barrett and family attended the dance in the Oddfellows Hall, Trenton, on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Jackson and Terry were Sunday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Woods, Salem. A good time and lots of music 1 enjoyed at the dance at Pine Grove school on Friday evening. ' Rev. J. Gibson, Baptist minister, called on Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Smith recently. BUSH SCHOOL January 17th, 1955. Mrs. Gerald Quinn visited her ther on Saturday. Miss June McColl and Mr. Hugh McColl spent the Weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rex McColl. Mr. and Mrs. Theo Jones were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Samis, Brown's Corners. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Wetherpu and children of Oshawa, called on Mr. Mrs. Glare Jones recently. Miss Ann Moreland and friend of Trenton were weekend visitors of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie More-land. Mrs. Rex McColl has been quite ill, but is somewhat better. Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Jones and children were Sunday visitors of his parents. The Farm Forum met at Mr. Reg. Hurk's on Monday, with a good attendance. Next Monday, Jan. 23, a euchre will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Ferguson. Plans being made for the dance on Feb. 10th. A good turnout is hoped for, THIS IS IT!! S. BOARD INAUGURAL MEETING The inaugural meeting of the East Northumberland District High School Board was held at the High School at Brighton on the evening of January 13th, 1956. All members as listed below were present: W. O. Graham, Township of Cram-ahe, 1 year. A. A. Kemp, United Counties, 1 Wesley C. Down, Township of Brighton, 1 year. N. N. Haggarty, Township of Murray, 1 year. Foster Boulton, Township of Murray, 2 years. R. J. Ross, Village of Brighton, 1 year. Sam Netley, Brighton Public School 1 year. A. T. Griffis, Village of Colborne, 1 year. Wm. T. Moran, Separate School No. 15, 1 year. In accordance with High Schools Act, the Secretary, Owen L. Finlay, presided over the meeting for the election of the Chairman. Nominations for this position were W. O. Graham, by N. N. Haggarty and A. T. Griffis, and Wesley C. Down, by R, J. Ross and Wm. T. Moran. It was moved by R. J. Ross, seconded by A. A. Kemp, that nominations be closed. Mr. Down, who had served as Chairman for two years, indicated his desire to withdraw as chairman in favour of Mr. Graham. This resulted in Mr. W. O. Graham being elected Chairman for 1956. Mr. Graham then assumed the chair for the remainder of the meeting. Nominations for Vice-Chairman suited in following names being brought forward: Foster Boulton, Sam Netley, Wesley Down and A. A. Kemp. All of these were withdrawn except Mr. A. A. Kemp, who was declared elected to this position. On motion by R. J. Ross, seconded by Wm. T. Moran, Oweri L. Finlay was re-appoihted as Secretary-Treasurer at same salary as past year, i.e., $1500.00 per annum plus 7c per mile necessarily travelled. Major Richards and Capt. Evans, from Department of National Defence were present to discuss with the Board the program of cadet training in both Colborne and Brighton schools. . It was agreed that the Board should name four committees with four n bers on each committee. This done with the following results, the first named being appointed by each committee as its chairman. Property Committee: A. A. Kemp, Wesley C. Down, A. T. Griffis, R. J, Ross. Management Committee: Wesley C. Down, R. J. Ross, A. T. Griffis, Sam Netley. Finance Committee: Sam Netley, Wm. T. Moran, N. N. Haggarty, Foster Boulton. Transportation Committee: N. N. Haggarty, Wm. T. Moran, A. A. Kemp, Foster Boulton. It was agreed that we request all municipalities to have sand placed on all school bus routes, either spread ice or available in piles on hills or A committee, representing teachers from both schools, consisting of Mr. Campbell, Mr. Rome, and Miss Smith attended the meeting. The request was presented by Mr. Campbell, that Board give consideration to increasing maximum salaries to $6400, and also annual increment toe raised to $300. Matter was discussed toy Board but no action taken. It was moved toy R. J. Ross, seconded toy N. N. Hagarty, that we do our banking at the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Brighton for the year 1956.--Carried. Mr. K. Pearce, manager of the Bank of Commerce was present and was advised of this resolution. By-Law No. 56, being a by-law to provide for the borrowing of $85,000 was read its several times and regularly passed. On motion by R. J. Ross, seconded by Sam Netley, it was agreed that the Board should hold its regular meetings on the second Friday night in each month at 8.00 p.m. Meetings to be held in Brighton except for months of April and October, or any other time when the need arises, when they would be held in Colborne. The minutes of the last regular meeting of the old Board held on December 14th were read and approved on motion by R. J. Ross, seconded by . T. Griffis. Correspondence was read and directions given for its disposition. On motion by Wesley C. Down, seconded by Sam Netley, it was agreed that we become member of the Ontario School Trustees and Ratepayers Association and remit the membership fee of $23.00. Mr. Baxter reported on Colborne High School. Mr. Fulton and Mr. Ew-1 lag reported on Brighton High School. It was agreed on motion by Wesley ; Down, seconded by N. N. Haggarty, that we place an order for 100 additional stacking chairs, with arm and desk top attachment. On motion by Foster Boulton, seconded by Wm. T. Moran, it was agreed that we should purchase materials for building clothes racks. Mr. T. Lance interviewed the board for an adjustment in the rates charged for collection of garbage. On motion by Wesley Down, seconded by COLBORNE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE The January meeting of the Wom-i's Institute of Colborne met at the home of Mrs. Max Telford on Tuesday, January 10th, 1956. As this was hard-time party, 20 members and two visitors sat down to a pot luck lunch at 12.30, mostly all dressed in hard-time costume, which looked very good. Business part of meeting got under way about 2 o'clock with Pres. Mrs. Gresham ta the chair. Most of the business had to do with planning for the extension service "Fix and Fit" to toe held on 17th and 18th of January ta Legion Rooms. During the afternoon we were favoured with a visit from the Craigs of Brlarwood Farm. The cast is as fol- | lows: Thomas Craig and Martha, Mrs. Lillian Mutton and Mrs. E. Smith, Ben MacFarlane and wife, Mrs. G. MacGregor and Mrs. Watson, Minnie, Mrs. Cortoyn, Freda, Mrs. Vanroon, Johnie, Margaret Mackie, Janice, being at school. It was a skit of humor, jokes and braiding of a rug and Freda and Johnie got engaged. Much credit is due those who played the parts. The part of Constable R. Ally, was played by Mrs. Royal. Mrs. Kirk had a well prepared program of which only some of it was given. A reading toy Mrs. Evely, Corns, Mrs. Royal, Lost Chances, Mrs. Cor-byn, Licences and Permits. Will all members having used Christmas cards bring them to February meeting which will toe at the home of Mrs. Mackie, February 14th at 2 p.m. The Judges on the Costumes were Mrs. Farrow and Miss Terril. prize, Mrs. Royal, 2nd prize, Mrs. MacGregor, 3rd prize, Miss Margaret Mackie. Auld Lang Syne and The Queen brought another friendly meeting to a close. Cobourg LINKS IN SAFETY CHAIN The principle of the "chain letter' using the telephone as the medium was applied to a safe driving campaign in the United States over the 4th of July. The General Federation of Women's Clubs, through its 16,000 local clubs, attempted to reach the maximum number of citizens by having each member call four other people during the week preceding the Fourth. The subject of the call was special care and caution on the streets and highways over the holiday. Each person called was urged to telephone four additional people and pass on the request to four more. JUNIOR WILLING WORKERS The first meeting of the Junior Wil ling Workers of Old St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was held Wednesday evening, Jan. 11th, 1956, at the home of Mrs. Eileen McKenzie, with an attendance of twenty-five. Hymn "Come Let us Stag of a Wonderful Love" was sung, followed by the reading from St. John's Gospel chapter 6 : 5-14 by Mrs. Kathy MacGregor. The ninth verse was the theme for the devotional, commented on by Mrs. L, M. Smith in the feeding of the five thousand we are told how it happened that a lad was present. It is> interesting to note, however, that the Ministry of Jesus was so vital, to Youth, that they were attracted to it! He did not know or realize what Jesus could do with the gift the lad had to offer. The speaker likened the newly formed group to the lad with the five barley loaves and the two small fishes, with youth and talents offered ta His service. Great things can be accomplished with God's blessing resting upon them. M. Smith, who called all officers together around a lighted candle representing Jesus as the "Light of the World" -- from this candle the new President lighted a candle "The Spirit of Love" -- so that love may shine brightly throughout the year and cast its gentle rays into the hearts of one and all and into the lives of all they may touch. The Secretary lighted a candle of "Faith" trusting that its light will shine far and wide, giving comfort and much strength to all. , The Treasurer lighted a candle of "Hope" for the new organization ta the eager expectation that its bright rays will give inspiration to all to work and pray. The Vice-President lighted a candle for all remaining Officers -- this was the candle of "Good Will' in the earnest hope that it will burn the whole year through, making clear to all the gracious character of God, and stirring within their hearts the eager desire to toe courageous and kind in all their dealings with one another. Prayer brought the meeting to a close. During the business period plans were made to hold a sale of home cooking and a rummage sale on Saturday, March 3rd. Refreshments were served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Kathy MacGregor and Mrs. Margaret Learmonth. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Margaret Barnes. India, a growing threat ta the world textile market, has a lower textile wage scale than Japan, generally felt to be the lowest in the world. Sam Netley, it was agreed that we should pay at the rate of $10 per month for ten months, and at the rate of $5 per month for July and August. Accounts totalling $899.20 were approved for payment on motion by Foster Boulton, seconded by Sam Netley. In view of~the cadet ball being held 1 our next regular meeting date, it was agreed on motion by Wm. T. Moran, seconded by R. J. Ross, that our next regular meeting be held on February 3rd, 1956 at Brighton.--Carried. The meeting did then adjourn.
