THEY HUFFED. THEY PUFFED THEIR 22 MILES Colborne Chronicle COLBORNE, ONTARIO Almost 200 enthusiastic entrants registered for this event. At. 8:00 a.m. Victoria Park was thronged with Rotarians, walkers and watchers. Everyone got off to a confident start around 8:30 a.m. It was a beautiful morning. The route was well policed by Rotarians and friends. Ample supplies of apples and oranges were available to all walkers en route; also water stations were set up. Among those walking were Mr. and Mrs. George Cunningham. George, who lives in Prince Edward County, is a Trenton High School teacher, and has run for the Liberal party in the P.E. Federal elections: his wife also walked 14 miles. 127 entrants went the whole distance, the last limping in at 6:00 p.m. Refreshments were waiting for all finishers in the park. Children made up the majority of the walkers and their determination ,to complete the course is to be greatly admired. Many walked for miles with blisters and swollen feet. Many more carried their shoes for the last part of the journey, and still limped over the finishing line. All this effort given freely and willingly for charity, which receives all proceeds from the event. The first 5 adults were : Harold Colling: Sharon Warner: Miles Summers: George Marshall: Miss Dale Stuart. The first 5 public school children were: Stephen Hill: Arnold Jones: Bill Chapman: David Peckham: Kim McBride. The first 5 high school entrants were: Doug Chapman: Chris Chisholm: Klaus Jem-mel: A. Whitehead: and Jim Chapin. Kathy Chisholm was the first girl to cross the finish line. START BUILDING FOR SENIORS A start has been made on the block of Senior Citizens Apartments in Colborne. Located west of the Town Hall, the land is being surveyed and levelled, and footings for the building dug. Twenty apartments are planned, ten lower and ten upper, and it is expected that tenants will occupv the apartments by Christmas." A survey by the Ontario Housing Corporation was taken last year in Colborne to evaluate the need for a housing unit for Senior Citizens and 50 replies to the questionnaire were returned. Rents for the new Senior Citizen Housing Unit will be scaled to income. Talk village growth Members of Colborne Council met with Mr . I. Anderson of the Department of Municipal Affairs on Tuesday June 2 in the Town Hall to discuss the future growth plans of Colborne. Problems regarding applications to subdivide land for building in the Village and controls and inspection required were dealt with. Mr. Anderson also presented information to Council on acceptance of plans, provisions for bylaws and extension of services, and costs were estimated. Present at the meeting were Reeve Delbert McLaughlin, Councillor Dance, Joe Blackwood, George Moore, clerk and Allan Learmonth.
