Colborne Chronicle June 18. 1970 page 5 Colborne WI The May meeting of Colborne Women's Institute was held at Mrs. E. Thompson's; the motto, "A chain is as strong as its weakest link" and Roll Call, "An important event of 1969". Mrs. Mackie read minutes of last meeting and motion passed to donate $10 to Union Cemetery. Mrs. Whaley on Agriculture reported a large wheat sale to Brazil, a first in that commodity for Canada, also the dry docking of luxury liners due to cut-rate air fares and prepackaged freights. Mrs. McGregor on Health told of research showing ill-health caused by lack of essentials found in green vegetables particularly peas and lentils. Mrs. Kernaghan, Current Events, spoke of the dedication of the Miss Padginton memorial. Mrs. Gresham reported on the Guelph Conference including a visit to the Adelaide Hoodless home, a step back in time to the 1800's. She reviewed president Mrs. Zoeller's address urging Branch Members to throw away negative attitudes and adopt the motto "If its going to be, its up to me". Women should not waste time on non-essentials, and WI growth is proof of this, she said. Programs are a necessity not a chore involving every member. The Branch is the most important part of the organization and members should "Learn one thing; Give one thing; Make one good friend; Have a good time". The definition of the Womens Institute "A world-wide democratic organization with a program to develop talents and leadership qualities of women of the community, and through projects give aid to women and children at home and abroad." Mrs. Thompson gave a resume of the Hand Book and Rules for a well run meeting. Mrs. D. Hetherington reviewing the Hand Books for Tweedsmuir History, mentioned this item of interest - In 1950 Colborne WI petitioned the Village Council to take steps to establish a permanent dentist in the community. Now 20 years later we are at long last able to welcome Dr. J.W. Shosenberg and to wish him well in his new practise. Mrs. Cliffe handed in 4 pair of beautifully knitted mittens for the annual bazaar.
