Page 14 Recommend mandatory vehicle belts The Ontario Medical Association will recommend to government that the wearing of a combination lap-shoulder belt be mandatory for drivers and all passengers of motor vechicles in the province. The Association's Committee on Accidental Injuries told a meeting of O.M.A.Council in Toronto, Monday, that following introduction of a similar law in Australia there was an immediate 20 per cent decrease in the number of fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents. There was also a 28 per cent decrease in serious injury, especially paraplegia and quadriplegia, and other head and spinal injuries. Renewed interest in North American food production after years of stagnation and recurring surpluses has resulted in higher enrolment in agricultural colleges and universities. Enrolment in U.S. agricultural colleges increased 45 per cent in '73 compared to 17 per cent for all other colleges. For the same period, Ontario universities increased 4 per cent and community colleges 11 per cent. For the first time since the educational boom began in the early 60's, agricultural diploma enrolment in Ontario has joined the swing upward, increasing by 7.5 per cent in '73. The number of graduates, however, will fall short of the requirements of the agricultural industry. In an article for the Ontario Ministry of Agri-cultlure and Food, Dr. Ford Stinson, Principal of Kemptville College, said "International trade in farm produce is passing from a buyer's to a seller's market. "With more people needed to manage farms and with new openings in agribusiness, the demand for agricultural diploma graduates far exceeds the supply ". Stinson noted that as the farm population dropped the composition of the student body changed. "More of them are women", he said, "and more are from urban backgrounds". In 1972, 35 of the 120 students enrolled in agriculture at Kemptville college were from urban areas and 6 were women. This year the proportion of urban students was down but more of the graduates will return directly to farms. Stinson's estimate of above 50 per cent compares with 35-45 per cent of the student body through the middle 60's. The report recommends that urban students begin the study of agriculture in the summer. Stinson holds that " it makes sense to learn agriculture during summer rather than when the ground is frozen or snow covered." College records indicate that urban students who begin in the summer have a higher performance level in the course. Denture wearers smile. Check on seeds If you're planning to grow your next flower or vegetable garden from seed, be sure to buy your seed from a reputable seedsman, advises Dave Sangster, horticultural specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Check that seed stock at gardening outlets has been stored under proper conditions. If you must store your seed for a few days before planting, remember that seeds are living things, requiring a relatively moist atmosphere and moderate temperatures. A commercial soil-less mix is a good choice as a germination medium. Such mixes often contain peat moss, vermiculite and perlite, as well as a small amount of fertilizer. Moreover, they do not require sterilization. Seeds for many annuals, such as tomato and petunia, can be sown either by carefully scattering the seed over the surface of the growning medium or by dropping it in rows. After covering the seed with about one-quarter inch of soil-less mix, moisten the area throughly with tepid water. Cover the containers with plastic to ensure a warm, humid environment for germination. The newly seeded containers should be placed in a warm location. After the seedlings have appeared, permit them to grow for two or three weeks before transplanting to larger containers. RHEUMATIC n AIM & ARTHRITIC TAIN Do you Jong for relief from your pain?
