At 5:40 a.m. Sunday morning Constable A. D. Tremeer of the Brighton detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated a break, enter and theft at the Trent Canal System Maintenance building on Highway 33. Two pick-up trucks were taken from the building. A wheelbarrow and cement mixer were pushed into the canal. Council correspondence Colborne council received correspondence Monday night from Ida Hobbs, requesting that action be taken to improve the swampy condition of her land. Council agreed that the situation might be improved by clearing bush from the adjacent Cedar Street road allowance . between Percy Street and Highway 2. The letter was referred to the roads foreman for action, with a request that he report back to council on the situation. Because of the natural springs in the area the council would not guarantee that the condition could be completely cleared up. Compensation increased Workmen's Compensation coverage of village firemen will be increased to $12,000 from the present $10,000, Colborne village council decided Monday night. The increased coverage would cost the village an extra $50.00 per year for the twenty one men involved. Workmen's Compensation coverage presently costs the village $252.00, and the new rate would be $302.40. The police report that it appears the thieves had been driving in a field and a cemetery in Murray township near the Crews barn. Police believe that one of the trucks broke down and the persons involved pushed it into the barn and set fire to the barn. As well as the truck and barn destroyed in the fire a disc cultivator, plough, land roller, hay rake, antique stage coach and three sleighs were also burnt. The other truck was probably used by the thieves to leave the scene, a police spokesman said. The truck has not yet been recovered.
