Wed.Sept. 11,1974 The Colborne Citizen Page 5 Recreation, service clubs meet of the peaches grown on his Highway i Local farmer growing peaches Archie Bellamy, RR4, Brighton, thinks the north shore of Lake Ontario may have a future in peach growing. The traditional fruit belt in the Niagara Peninsula has been losing land to developers, as skyrocketing prices make farming an uneconomical land use. Faced with the prospect of decreasing orchard acreage in the Peninsula, the Department of Agriculture ,has been experimenting with grafts of peaches, apricots and other soft fruits on to hardy root stocks which they hope will thrive outside the warmer Banana Belt climate. Mr. Bellamy has owned his Cramahe township farm since the 1930's, growing apples, tomatoes and vegetables. In the Spring of 1973, he planted 16 one year old whips, or cuttings, from Red Haven, Dixie Red and Envoy peach varieties, grafted to a dwarf Siberian root stock, and was rewarded this year with a large enough crop to supply his wife and neighbors with all the peaches they could eat. (This reporter sampled a few and guarantees them as good as any from the established Niagara orchards.) With peaches selling for $160 to $185 a ton, it won't be surprising to see more area farmers following Mr. Bellamy's example.
