It was easy to decide where to go for the best fish. We had heard that Crowe Lake, just outside of Havelock, was the best spot at this time of year. So, Saturday morning we set out bright and early, eager to get a bass or pickerel, maybe even a muskie, on our lines. To put a damper on our high spirits, it drizzled all day. But we all know that a little rain never bothers a good fisherman. That is of course, if the fish are biting. We naturally started out by using the very best bait nature invented; slimy, fat, dew worms. Nothing. So we switched to practically every guaranteed lure that we had. Two bites but still no fish later, we returned to the use of worms. Now I must say that the sunfish and baby perch found a gold mine in food through us. They ate up every single worm we had. We became very discouraged and left them with full stomaches but mouths still open. But we still had Sunday and Monday, so we thought. Sunday was a perfect day for fishing but our car didn't think so. We ended up by spending the day fixing the car and doing housework. Now that's a nice way to spend a Sunday, but not on a long weekend. You are supposed to enjoy those few days of relaxation by doing things that you normally don't have time for. At least we still had Monday left. Now we all know that Monday dawned cold and cloudy while we donned two pairs of jeans, bulky knit coats. Back to Crowe Lake we go, prepared for the cold, an amply supply of worms at our side, and with a strong will of determination. Foolishly, we rented a boat for the day then approached the dock just as a fisherman returned with two beautiful pickerel. We figured that it was going to be a day when nothing could go wrong. I must say that we did have a little more success. I lost a four pound bass through my own foolishness, but we did manage to keep one bass and one nice size mudcat. But once again those baby perch ate up all of our worms. I must say that those little fish have a lot of nerve. I mean, have you ever caught a fish that was hanging on to the bottom of the worm, the part that isn't on the hook? Six hours later, cold, hungry, tired and completely discouraged, we left Crowe Lake vowing never to return.
