Oct. 23, 1974 The Colborne Citizen Page 5 Disappointing crowd for band concert A disappointing crowd of almost 200 people were on hand in the auditorium of ENSS, Brighton last Thursday evening, for a concert by the Cobourg Kiltie Concert Band. The Band was conducted by its Director of Music, Mr. Roland George White, RM (retired). All proceeds of the concert will be used for the Rotary Club of Colborne charitable and community services. In sponsoring the event, the Rotary Club of Colborne said "It is an honour to sponsor this concert, the first, we hope, of many annual presentations by this fine Concert Band". Judging by the tremendous amount of applause following each selection, the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the performance which was begun with "Tunes of Glory", the band's theme song. It is a Fantasia on the tune "Scotland The Brave", the Band's signature tune, played at the beginning of every performance. A brilliant concert march in the modern idiom, "Totem Pole", by Eric Osterling, followed. Using a pyramid effect, the result is not unlike a totem pole, building to a dynamic finish. "Fiddler On The Roof", arranged for band by J.H. Burden, was the Band's next presentation. This was the music from the very successful film of the same name. In it, several well-known melodies were heard such as "Fiddler On The Roof", "Sunrise, Sunset", "If I Were A Rich Man", and "Matchmaker". Three popular numbers performed in the Latin-American tempo and style were presented next. They were "More", "Yellow Bird", and "Blue Tango". A Euphonium solo entitled "Rondo" by Mozart, was presented by soloist, musician Colin Jones. This solo was taken from Mozart's Concerto and was arranged for the euphonium by Denis Wright. In a true boisterous style of composer Richard Wagner, excerpts from the Opera "Die Meistersingcrs", arranged for band by Eric Osterling, were offered by the Band. "Instant Concert" arranged by Harold L. Walters, always a favourite with audiences anywhere, drew tremendous applause. It is a novelty number containing short excerpts from well-known pieces. A trumpet trio entitled "Bugler's Holiday" by Leroy Anderson, was presented next by Band members Ken Cory, David Bryson, and Gordon Dyell. "The Blue and The Gray" by Clare Grundman, closed out the first half of the program. It is a saga of songs made popular during the American Civil War. All the songs were composed and published during the war years with the exception of "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic", which was written earlier. This medley got its title from the colours of the opposing armies' uniforms, and contained such well-known songs as "Marching Through Georgia", "Dixie", and "The Yellow Rose Of Texas". A selection entitled "Bandology". a Concert March by Eric Osterling, started off the second half of the evening's program. It was followed by such selections as "The Blue Tail Fly" by Clare E. Grundman; "Trombonanza" presented by Trombone soloists Bill Crawford, Keith Wilson, and Jack Irvine; the "Lustpeil Overture" by Keler & Bela arranged by Frank Winterbottom; and "Two Too British" by Hugh M. Stuart. This piece has two movements. The first is titled "From The West" and is a variation on the well-known tune, "The Kerry Dance' The ■ second movement is titled "From The East", and combines "The British Grenadiers" and "Rule Brittania" intermingled in a rollicking hodgepodge which gently chides the staid character of these melodies. Adding to the variety of the program were selections such as "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin, part of the music from the film "The Sting", a clarinet trio "Merryment Polka" by George D. Barnard presented by soloists Bob Irvine, Ed Ruggles, and John Kee; a Beatle medley arranged by Andrew Balent including "Michelle", "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yesterday", "Finlandia", a tone poem by Jean Sibelius; and the Regimental March of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, "A Life On The Ocean Waves". The evenings program concluded with the playing and singing of "O'Canada". Community Hilltoppers plan Achievement Day Community Hilltoppers met Oct. 5, 2:00 p.m. at Mrs. Bulman's. They opened with O'Canada and the 4-H pledge. The treasurer and secretary then gave their reports. Following the collection roll call was answered by naming a recipe or food characteristic of England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales. One of the home assignments was naming some wild foods such as wild berries, game, rice, nuts, grapes and apples which are found in our community. Mrs. Bulman demonstrated how to make Irish Soda Bread. Conversation was varied from British, Scotch, Irish and Welsh traditions to talking about different cheeses. Achievement day was also discussed and committees were decided on. Lynn Bulman, Becky Herrington and Christine Chatten are the Script Committee. Anne Morgan, Donna Van Slyke and Laurie Plue make up the Poster Committee. Later the girls were divided into groups which made "Golden Buck", one had to cut and butter the bread and one had to do the dishes. After everyone tasted the bread and Golden Buck the meeting was closed.
