Page 10 The Colborne Citizen Nov. 27, 1974 Dave Peckham A dedicated runner Both Colborne and Brighton can be justifiably proud of the accomplishments of 16-year-old Dave Peckham - Colborne because it is Dave's home and, Brighton because that is where Dave does all his running from. DAVE PECKHAM To top off all his accomplishments over the past three years, Dave placed second in the All-Canadian Midget Cross Country, 4,000 meter Championships held in St. Catharines recently. Dave is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mert . Peckham, 32 Church St.W., Colborne, and has lived all his life in Colborne. He stands five feet, four inches tall and weighs a mere 107 pounds. He attended Colborne Public School and began his running career there in Grade 8 when he placed second in the mile run at a Public School Meet held in Brighton that year. Now in his third year at East Northumberland Secondary School, Dave has been running ever since he entered the school and is a member of the school track team as well as a member of the Branch 100 Royal Canadian Legion team of Brighton. He says it was on an invitation from the ENSS running coach, Brian Camani, that he first started running at ENSS and has now become so interested in the sport that he intends to go all the way in it. He has his sights set on some day, representing Canada in the Olympics. In his first year at ENSS, Dave won first place in the midget division of the cross country run of the Central Ontario Secondary School Association's track meet and placed 12th in Ontario Federation Secondary School Association. At COSSA, in track and field, he placed second in the 1,500 meter race and first in the 3,000 meters. He placed 16th at the OFSSA meet in the 1,500 meter. In spite of the fact the training season was late getting started in Dave's second year at ENSS, he won first place honours in the 1,500 meter Steeple Chase at COSSA and 5th place in the 3,000 meter Steeple Chase. He placed 16th in the Cross Country run at COSSA. Dave got beat out by less than a foot in his qualifying heat of the OFSSA Steeple Chase. 1974 was a banneryear for Dave as he earned no less than four firsts and one second place honours at the various meets. He started off by placing first in a Toronto District Secondary School Association Invitational Cross Country meet in Toronto; first in the Bay of Quinte meet; first in both COSSA and OFSSA (all in the Junior classification); then finished the season by placing second in the Canadian Midget Championships. Dave says he runs because he likes it and he likes it because it is something to work for. "Whenever I start something, I have just got to finish it", Dave says. So far, he has been able to combine both his studies and his running without any interference, maintaining an academic standing around the 75 percent mark. His ambition is to make it to the international competition and maybe, represent Canada in the Olympics. Dave gives a great deal of credit to his coach, Brian Camani, and also to the encouragement of his parents and one brother and two sisters. This accomplished young runner gives a lot of credit too, to the fact he kept running ENSS gains split Provincial Police report DEER KILLED - Police report a collision between a car and a deer. Says Dave, "I took a week's holiday after the Canadian Championships but I started running again last Monday. Some runners never stop but I feel I need a rest once in a while, especially if I haven't been doing so well".
