Nov. 27, 1974 The Colborne Citizen Page 5 Letter to the Editor: Dear Sirs: I am certainly pleased that the "Concerned Citizens" are taking care of the interests of us poor unorganized, misinformed taxpayers. It is encouraging to know that we have such an impressive array of technical and legal experts safeguarding our interests at no cost to the community. PETER DAVIS Having participated recently at the All-Candidates meeting in Colborne I had looked forward to a lengthy report on the proceedings in the Colborne Chronicle, especially to inform those who were unable to attend. We are now, it seems, even protected from what we read or do not read by our wonderful "Concerned Citizens". The newspaper story came from notes written by a director of the "Concerned Citizens". The Chronicle editor was not present at the meeting. We have two declared candidates for Council representing the "Concerned Citizens" and yet the newspaper coverage comes from the "Concerned Citizens" I must ask myself at this time if this can clearly be called unbiased reporting. We are hearing about conflicts of interest in matters that have been carried out openly and with more than adequate press coverage. I maintain that the "Concerned Citizens" had best leave the reporting and editing of public meetings to those who are so employed. Peter Davis, P. Eng., 4 North Street, Colborne, Ont. Dear Editor: I would just like to comment on the assumptions of both Mr. Collins and Mr. Downs that the gyms could be used more instead of building a community centre. I believe the readers of this paper may be a bit confused on this point. As the assistant head of the physical education department at the high school, it is my responsibility to keep track of gym use for the community and the school. No one running for office has bothered to contact the school to inquire about gym use, but have made the assumption that they are free for greater use. It has been the policy of the administration and the department of physical education to encourage maximum use of the gyms by the school and King St. W. Colborne 355-2829 Known by Service community. As it stands now the gyms are used from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Monday to Friday. From 8:30 av.m. to 7 p.m. school activities predominate, with the remainder of the time going to night, school. Some of the night school activities have been forced to the public school due to a problem of finding time and space for them. On weekends, gym use is just as tight. Saturdays, the gyms are used from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This however only accounts for regular use. Many special events are booked in the gyms. Examples are the school musical, Lion's Club, Eastern Star, 4-H Clubs, Elementary School Competitions, Community meetings with Ontario Hydro and Election Meetings. Three major points can be gathered from these facts. Number one, we have a very active community, interested in a growing number of activities. Are we going to have to turn some people back? Number two, the use of the gyms by a population of 3,000 people is nearing the maximum. What is to be done when the population increases? There are subdivisions already planned. Let's plan for the future not just the present. Number three, I believe we need a community centre, but along with the, community centre a full-time recreation director to manage the facilities and the activities. I am sure the community is aware of the summer use of the gyms. Two Brighton area student groups obtained Opportunities for Youth grants and ran recreation and theatre programmes at the school this past summer. Over 350 students between the ages of 7 and 13 participated. Let'a support those in our community who carry out the programmes "that we all participate in!
