Mr. Huskilson, said the interests of Port Hope, Cobourg, Hope and Hamilton would be best served by a total amalgamation but efforts to amalgamate were being thwarted by petty parochialism. He said Cobourg had been working towards amalgamation since the diamond triangle committee was set up seven years ago. "We have had some assistance from some of our neighbors but for the most part we have met with resistance on the part of others", he said. "In the interval development has been heaped upon us. As a result we are fast approaching a point of no return to this degree-either we have to amalgamate or we have to annex". Mr. Huskilson said he preferred amalgamation and had attended the joint meeting in Cold Springs to discuss Minister Donald Irvine's request that the municipalities make boundary recommendations. The meeting, however, had become a diatribe and had not come to grips with the problems. "We have been associated with petty parochialism on the part of a few for the past seven years", he said. "So much so, that now even the minister recognizes it for what it really is. For seven years we have attempted to meet on a common ground. For seven years we have tried to see the forest for the trees. For seven years we have tried to embrace the totality of our 'greater community' and for seven years we have been unduly thwarted in our efforts by a few short sighted people who imagine themselves to be champions of democracy and keepers of the historical keys that keep us locked unto this geopolitical straightjacket for 150 years". Mr. Huskilson said the time had come when a higher power would step in and tell the community "Look you silly people, this is what you need to do and since you seem to be incapable of agreeing to do it together we shall legislate it for you". He said he was tired of procrastination and ineptitude and stupid attempts to meet on a common ground only to run headlong into a stone wall camouflaged by a few individuals who considered themselves the papal preservers of old Nor- Vincent Massey work begins IMPERIAL BAKE 'N SERVE NORTHAM INDUSTRIAL PARK COBOURG We have an opening for Production Shift Foreman to Supervise 20 Employees in the production of Frozen Bread Dough. Business administrator Al MacLeod said the site- next to Merwin Greer school was "a beautiful piece of land" and was ideally suited for outdoor education and nature study. Director of Education Frank Thorn said the board had been trying to acquire the property for some time. Asked by Al Strike who was getting the better bargain chairman Howard Sheppards said "I don't think there will be too much difference." Russ Walker however felt that the site the school board was acquiring was worth much more than the property they were giving up.
