Successor to The Colborne Express (est. 1866) end The Colborne Enterprise (est. 1886) § Thursday, April 1st, 1965 - $4.00 U.S.A. rer copy FIRE DESTROYS ABSENT COUPLE'S HOME Recent Graduate School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Belleville, were held in Education Hall, Belleville General Hospital on Friday March 26th. Among those graduating was Miss Judy Fletcher, younger daughter of Mrs. G. <Fletcher of Colborne and the late Mr. George Fletcher. Looking smart and impressive in their lab coats, each of the graduating class members carried a spray of eighteen roses, one for each of the eighteen months spent in intensive study culminating in this day's proceed. Lunch was served by the graduates to those attending the ceremony. ' ■•' ••• Those attending from this district included Mrs. George Fletcher and her two sisters, Mrs. Norman Thomas (Peggy) with her husband, and Miss Marilyn Fletcher Mr. Frank Quinn, Mrs. B. Summers, and Mr. and Mrs. Aud-ly Sheldrick Miss Fletcher graduated as a Laboratory Technologist. She intends to stay at Belleville General Hospital for at least a year and will continue her studies A fine old two-storey frame house, probably one. of the first built in Colborne, was destroyed by fire early Monday morning, at the junction of Church Street and Burnham Avenue, s During the very early hours.of the morning residents west of the house, smelling smoke in their homes, inspected their o wn-premises and furnaces. , Outside there was a typical March stor.ni. with. wind-driven snow limiting visibility. Mr. Gerald Fox, next door, west of the doomed house, said that;at;;about 3 a.m. he heard a noise, somewhat like a muffled explosion, put after examining his own home and looking around; outside he returned to bed, as he saw'no sign of fire. The fire meanwhile, was contained in the house by a stee'. roof and a heavy blanket of snow. Colborne Fire Brigade was ca! -ed at 5.55 a.m. and found the house ablaze Inside with fire breaking out from the eaves. Shortly afterward; flames leapt skyward as part of the roof collapsed. Because of the high wind and danger to nearby houses, Brighton Fire Brigade was called and attended to assist. The firefighters poured thousands of gallons of water into the inferno until about 10.00 a.m. after which Brighton Brigade stood by ir case of a further flare up. Examination of the house re vealed no sign of furnace explos ion. Immediately above the fur nace a large hole was burned ir the dining-room floor, the sec-floor and the roof. Mr. Orlaph Phillips, brother of Mrs. Haynes, who was to cele-, brate his 25th wedding anniversary on March 23rd, was also honoured and he and his wife were presented with gifts to make this a double celebrsf:^n.
