COLBORNE CHRONICLE - Thursday. May 4th, 1867 Severl Jots And Thoughts For Northumberland Farmers by A. N. Watson Agricultural representative You can always spot a well-informed man, his views are the same as your own. FARM ACCIDENTS -- Northumberland County is one of ten in Ontario that in 1967 is conducting a farm accident survey. Farm people in each school section or former school section have been designated as reporters. With the advent of spring seeding, we are afraid that these people may have some accidents to report. Farm people are asked to use extra care, but when accidents do occur to notify the farm accident reportter in their area. SPRING SEEDING -- Spring seeding got underway in high gear last weak. In general this is e week to ten days later than in 1966. Early planting is recommended for any crop that will not be damaged by late spring REGIONAL TRIALS -- In order to assess new varieties of grains, suitable to Northumberland conditions it try to test for yields. Trials are being set out at many farms across Northumberland to demonstrate new varieties or sprays. One of special interest is the oat and barley trials at the farm of Reg McCann of Codrington. The yields from these plots will be used in conjunction with plots all across the province in assessing the varieties of oats and barley most suitable to Ontario. SEEDING INTENTIONS -- The Dominion Burean of Statistics has reportetd on the survey giving the intentions of farmers as to what they will plant. The big change comes in barley and corn, where it is estimated that there will be 6% more acres in corn and 6% more acres in barley than there were last year. It is probably true that Northumberland as a group will be increasing these two crops in these proportions. EXPO -- Expo opened in Montreal last week, and from first reports it is encouraging to note that agriculture has not been given a back seat. Many farm people from Northumberland County will likely be visiting Expo this year. They will have an opportunity to see some of Canada's best livestock which are known throughout the world. It is an excellent public relations exhibit on behalf of the agricultural industry. It is hoped that the millions of urban people who visit Expo will gain a better understanding of where their food comes from. THE ALL-NEW, DE LUXE THIS THURS. TO SAT.
