COLBORNE CHRONICLE Successor to The Colborne Express (est. 1866) and The Colborne Enterprise (est. 1886) PRINTED and PUBLISHED in COLBORNE, ONTARIO VoL 9 -- No. 18 Thursday, May 4th, 1967 7c per copy -- $3.00 Canada -- 5 CURLING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING Colborne Curling Club Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, April 29th, at the Canadian Legion Hall. President Al Thrower presided and called the meeting to order. The minutes of the last annual meeting, April 21st, I960, were read by the secretary, Cy Williams, and passed as read. The financial statement was read by the treasurer, William Irvine, and passed, Auditor George Johns gave a short resume of the financial position of the club and reported everything in satisfactory order. The president expressed appreciation to all his executive for their work and co-operation throughout the year. A new slate of officers for the 1967-68 season was presented by Jack Armstrong, with the following being elected: President, Leo Bausch; Vice-President, John Seeley; Secretary, Cy Williams; Treasurer, Wm. Irvine. Auditors for the 1967-68 season: Don Campbell and Jim Knight. Directors elected: Russ Teal, Orv Delaney, Chas. Hall and Jerry Beaudry. The president reviewed the budget proposed for the coming year and welcomed the new executive. The meeting then closed and the prestation of prizes and trophies took place. The Rimmer Trophy for the Ladies' Curling; presented by LoisSeeley, won by Helen Griffis, Flo Cammack, C. Scroggs and Chris Shepherd. Persofsky Trophy: presented by John Seeley, won by Del McLaughlin, O. Delaney, Cy Williams and Lloyd Chap- The Durham Shield: won by Mr. McCrory, Harry Earle, Al Dale and J. Beaudry. The Knight Trophy presented by J. Knight, won by Eric Hiltz, Cecil Reed, Ray Blakeley and Ross Teal. Seaway Trophy for Mixed Curling: presented by Eric Hiltz, won by Leo Rotteveel, Nancy Stantial, Kathy O'Neill and Norman O'Neill. The Bowes Trophy for Mixed Curling; presented by Del McLaughlin, won by Eric Hiltz, Nellie Hiltz, Tom Seaborn and Doris Blackwood. The Fox Shield for Mixed Curling: presented by Del McLaughlin, won by Eric Hiltz, Nellie Hiltz, Helen Campbell' and Don Campbell. The president expressed regret that we were losing two good members and excellent curlers, Eric and Nellie Hiltz, and wished them all good luck PRINTING MACHINERY FOR CHRONICLE This is the first edition of the Colborne Chronicle printed on equipment delivered here last week. A larger press than the one previously in use and a folder shown above on the float on which they came, will make for more efficient production of the local newspapper. in their new home. They will be very much missed in Colborne by their friends. Following the presentation of prizes, an evening of dancing was enjoyed, with music by Jack Armstrong's band. At midnight, the ladies of the Legion served a delicious buffet of cold turkey, beef and assorted cuts of meat, salads, relishes and coffee. There was a very small turnout of members for this Annual Meeting, which was disappointing to the committee who spent a great deal of time planning and arang-ing al lthe details. Those of us who were there had a very pleasant evening and a lot of fun. So next year, let us make it at least a 90% attendance at the Annual Meeting and support the work of our club. So, until next winter when the cry of "sweep" will resound through the Rink, 1st us hang up our brooms, store our sweaters and boots, and look forward to renewed fellowship an good curling. Haynas CRAMAHE TOWNSHIP SCHOOL AREA A special meeting was called on Saturday, April 1, 1967, at 3 o'clock, at Castleton School, to meet with the architect Mr. Creighton, re school condition and water supply. All members were present. -After a thorough investigation and before Mr. Creighton left it was decided for Mr. Creighton to arrange a meeting with the engineer to meet the Board at the school in a few days. The Board met then by themselves and after a short discussion, it was moved by Mrs. Steeves and seconded by Mr. Leslie Piatt that we advertise for 3 new teachers, 1 junior, 1 primary, and 1 special educational teacher. The advertisement to be in the Globe & Mail on April 6, 7 and 8. On motion of Mr. Wm. Davidson and seconded by Mr. Carl Montgomery, the meeting was then adjourned. A special meeting was called to order on Monday, April 17, 1967, by the chairman, Mr. Watson, with Mrs. Steeves, Carl Montgomery and Wm. Davidson present. Mr. Chas. Young, Inspector, and Mr. Creighton were also in attendance. The meeting was held in South Cramahe School. Mr. Creighton reported that to all sense and purpose the interior was completed, and could be used at any time. The outside would be finished in about ten days. (continued on back page) PUBLIC SPEAKING AT COLBORNE PUBLIC SCHOOL Thursday, April 27, was the evening when the parents and pupils came to the Colborne Public School Auditorium to hear the Oral Compositions and the School Choirs. This evening was much enjoyed by all. Following is the programme: Grades one and two choir sang .The Snowman. Indian Lullaby and The Five Vowels were sung by Grades three, and four choir. The senior boys choir sang Soiig of the Tub and the senior girls choir Have a Bonnet Trimmed with Blue. The last song was Balloo Balleerie sung by the Double Trio of Grade eight girls. The first speaker was Paul Waller, who spoke about You. Etiquette was the topic Debbie .MacDonald chose. Ian Mac Gregor spoke about Time. A Trip to Floridda was Ruth Dale's choice. Speaker five, Dianne Jensen, spoke about Dogs. Timber was June Anne Clarey's topic. Judy Learmonth, wwho was number seven, spoke about Ballet. Next was Brenda Baker speaking about Superstitions. Man-dy Gardner chose to speak on Carnaby Street. Why Parents Can't Add was told by David MacPhee. Speaker eleven was Sharon McLaughlin who spoke about Curling. Bonnie Teal, the last speaker, chose Jacqueline Kennedy as her topic. (continued page three) LOTS OF ITEMS FOR TALENT NIGHT With about twenty numbers alrady arranged for Aalent Night at the Legion Hall on Saturday, it would seem that a most enjoyable and entertaining time is in prospect. Quite a numebr of adults will be taking part, and before the show proper begins, Mrs. Ed Roddy will be playing the piano. There will be dancing afterward to the music provided by The Villagers, for modern, old time and square dancing. The event is under the sponsorship and guidance of the Recreation Committee. NO TOLL CHARGES BETWEEN GRAFTON AND COLD SPRINGS Toll charges on ttelephone calls between Cold Springs ' and Grafton exchanges will be lifted as of May 5th. J. H. Guest, manager of Bell Canada's Cobourg territory, said that the reason behind this move is the growing relationships between the communities which the exchanges serve. He added that the lifting of long distance charges on calls between the two exchanges would not result in a rate increase for any of their customers.
