Mrs. George Armstrong of Edville was hostess for the April gathering of the Salem United Church Women last Wednesday evening. Twenty* nine ladies from Salem and Edville enjoyed this evening of fellowship. "God is as near as a whispered prayer," was the theme of the poem chosen by the president .to open the meeting. Mrs. Sydney Pearson was in charge of worship and pro-garm. A short dialogue taken from the Study Guide of "The Church and the World" was presented by Mesdames Wm. Brown, Arthur Trenear and S Pearson. A lively discussion period followed. The topic was, "Is it better to practise religion in the ordinary jobs of the world or in a monastery?" During the business period the date was set for the annual Strawberry Social. Report from the M. &* M. treasurer showed that the Lenten boxes were definitely worth while., Over $40.00 has been realized to date A letter was read by the Sunshine convener from Mrs. (Rev.) Taylor thanking us for the get-well wishes sent to Rev. Taylor last month. Mrs. Carman reported on the Christian Education meeting at Colborne United Church on April 24th. In place of program, the ladies were privileged to view slides taken by Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Carman during their recent holiday in Spain. The beautiful pictures, plus the interesting running commentary by Mrs. Carman, were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Choral Benediction (212) sung in unison, closed the meeting. Mr. Herbie Trottman returned home Saturday from Cobourg District General Hospital after undergoing surgery for hernia. We wish him a speedy recovery. Interment in Union Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Hilton White and Mrs. Archie McCracken, Colborne, spent Tuesday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Honey to play a tape for them from John and Lois White in Germany describing their Easter holidays in the French Riviera and Monico. Mr .Harold Trottman, Lillian and Glenda, Brighton, were Sunday supper guests oi Mr. and Mrs. Herbie Trottman. Mrs. Roy Chapman was pleasantly surprised when 35 of her family gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Waite Friday evening in honour of her birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mutton also atterded. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chapman returned home Saturday after spending a month on a motor trip through the United States to California. Mr. Alan Mutton, Lancaster, spent the weekend with his grandmother, Mrs. Roy Chapman. Misses Donna Waite, Hilton, and Jane Chapman, Brown's Corners, spent Sunday with her. Mills, took place, making Mr. Neil Black the lucky owner. While the judges were making their decision, Sally Campbell, Vali Harnden, Su-sanne Rutherford, Kim Learmonth, Sharon Hudson and Nelson Parker entertained with several songs. Mr. Latifner presented the 1st prize trophy to Ian Mac-Gregor, the 2nd prize trophy to Mandy Gardner while Bonnie Teal was 3rd place winner and Sharon McLaughlin received the 4th place cup.
