Six COLBORNE CHRONICLE - Thursday, August 3,1st. 1967 Jots And Thoughts For Northumberland Farmers by A. N. Watson Agricultural Representative SLOGAN -- Before you flare up at someone else's fault take time to count ten -- of your own. JUNIOR FARMER LEADERSHIP TRAINING CAMP -- Leadership Camp this year will be held from September 4th to 11th. Northumberland's delegates will be Sherron Webb from Roseneath and Clifford Grills from Campbellford. The camp is being held at Geneva Park on Lake Cou-chiching, 90 miles north of Toronto. Each delegate will have a chance to participate in a general program of leadership training, which will include Officers Workshops, Social Recreation Workshops, Debating Workshops and many others of equal interest. In addition there are many social events planned for the week. It should be a very enjoyable and profitable week. Congratulations to both these Junior Farmers. NEW LIVESTOCK STATISTICS SHOW DAIRY COWS INCREASE -- The Farm Economics, Co-operatives, and Statistics Branch, Ontario Department of Agriculture & Food, has released latest figures on livestock numbers as to June 1, 1967. Total cattle numbers in Ontario are • 3,165,000; total sheep and lambs, 259,000. The only significant change is a reverse trend in dairy cows. This is the first year since 1961 that cows and heifers have shown an increase - almost 2% more cows and about 10% more heifers tha na yea rago. Generally swine numebrs are up and prices are not expected to rise until the new year. SWINE CLUB TRIP -- Last week 36 Northumberland 4-H Swine Club members and directors of the Northumberland Hog Producers Association travelled to the Toronto area for the day. Places visited were Canada Packers, the Ontario Hog Producers Association Headquarters, and Shur-gain Research Farms. A banquet dinner was supplied by the Ontario Hog Producers Association. The highlight of the day was the Hog Producers Headquarters where the selling and buying of hogs was observed. The system is very unique and the only one of jts kind in the world. A special thanks to the Northumberland Hog Producers for making this trip possible. SWINE FEEDING -- A major question is do we full feed for hgh average daly gan and feed efficency or do we Imt feed for carcstss qualty. Hogs full fed wil consume approximately 3%% 'of their body weight while hogs restricted will receive about V&% of their body weight in air dried feed. If hogs are not rstricted the carcass quality is greatly reduced. Barrows tend to eat more and to fatten more quickly than gilts although their feed efficiency is about the same. Protein levels also affct carcass quality. As protein is increased the lean in the carcass increases. We can vary protein and still get the same rate of gain but quality suffers, ded protein level in finishing hogs is 14%. Soybean ol meal is the most pactical supple- ment but work is still being . done on purified amino acids. It s hard to get high rates of gain and carcass quality both. A feed efficiency of 3 lbs./ feed/lbs. gain and an average daily gain of 1.96 is considered good. Some hog men are using rations with a constant protein level for both hogs and sows but regulating the feed intake. In genral soybean oil meal and corn or barley is recommended for hog rations. Also high moisture cm with the proper protein level deserves attntibn . and may be the ideal feod in large operations. Notice to Parents Advance registration for children who did not attend Colborne Public School last year, will be held in the school on Friday, September 1st. Newcomers to Colborne are urged to register their children at this time. Kindergarten classes will be held in the regular school this year, rather than in the Town Hall as formerly. Therefore, as soon as possible after buying, separate and place only the fully ripened fruit in the refrigerator. Then spread the remaining peaches out so that they are not touching and use as they ripen. Peaches will ripen best at room temperature, advise Food Specialists at Macdonald Institute, Guelph.
