The truck, owned by Bulk Carrier Transport, went out of control and struck the abutment of Driver's Rest underpass; overturning the trailer and turning the tractor around to face the way it had been coming. ,.: The acid, Phthaltic Anky-"dride." is used "for insulation-material. A large amount of the acid Was spread over the shoulder of 401 and had turned from liquid to solid. Cobourg fire department was called to stay on the scene of the . accident in case of fire. Fire started at 7.00 a.m. and firemen used a dry chemical on the small blaze,: "Water could not be used on the acid," said a fireman. In the meantime, traffic was changed to Grafton and to Highway 2, causing congestion on Cobourg main streets. There was some trouble earlier in the day when large trucks tried to drive through the CNR 11 foot seven inch subway. Traffic piled up. A. Schofield, terminal manager and N. Brown, fleet superintendent of Bulk Carrier, came from Oak-ville, to the scene. Mr. Schofield said he estimated the damage to be $40,000. The tractor was travelling from Cornwall to Dixie Ter minal. Wreck On 401 A spectacular collision at the Driver's Rest bridge, north side 401, involved a 20-ton tractor-trailer and the concrete underpinning of the bridge. Telltale mark? were visible where the truck struck the concrete. But the bridge stood firm despite the terrific impaet. Suddenly the truck spun westward, turned over beyond the bridge to face in the direction it had come -- a hopeless wreck in one split sedond Top two pictures reveal plight of trailer following crash. Co-bourg's Albert Prentice is shown in lowest picture, an experienced workman planning the best way to clear the highway for westbound traffic. Cobourg was a hive of traffic yesterday with westbound movement de-toured at Grafton to Number Two and back again to 401 at Cobourg. This went on from early morning into the afternoon.
