Thursday, June 19, 1969 Colborne Chronicle NEWS OF SALEM C.W.L. The CWL of St Francis de Sales Parish held their June meeting at the home of Mrs Vern Wood, Tuesday June 10. There were twenty members and one visitor present. The president, Mrs Wood conducted the meeting. It was announced that Summer School for the children will be held from July 7 to 11. Two sisters of St. Josephs Order will conduct the classes and the ladies of the CWL will give a picnic for the children on the last day of classes. The ladies turned in fourteen stockings filled with gifts for the children in the far north. This project sponsored by a group from Toronto called 'Christmas in July' and is planned to give treats to children in isolated communities where the only means of transportation is by water and as this is not pos sible in the winter months this project makes it possible to bring joy to many children when the rivers are open. Our annual tea and bazaar will ibe held early November. The date will be announced in the Coming events column soon. Meeting The highlight of the evening was a talk given by a representative of the Childrens Aid Society from Port Hope. Mrs Mary Moore was the guest speaker and she gave a most interesting account of the work being done in this area. She outlined the four phases of the work of the CAS. These are, unwed mothers foster homes, adoption and family protection. She stressed the strictly confidential nature of their work and the emphasis put on the welfare of the children in their care. She explained the continual need for applicants as foster and adoptive parents in order that the children be placed in the best possible way. Mrs Wood expressed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Moore for her very interesting talk. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs John Carey on the first Tuesday in September. Mrs Arthur Carey then made a motion for the adjournment of the meeting. A delicious lunch was served by the hostess assisted by Mrs R Fawcett and Mrs L Sayers and Mrs Lome Hill. The Salem Decoration Day Service was well attended despite the rain last Sunday afternoon. Rev. J Mackechnie of Colborne Presbyterian Church was the guest minister. "The Board should take advantage of this revision in price which does not change the overall tender price but could mean an increase in the amount of grant." Brownies Revel On Saturday, June 14, twenty five Brownies with their leaders left the Youth Centre tor Shelter Valley Park. They arrived at 11.00 in time for the opening ceremonies. The meeting place was transformed into a Japanese Garden complete with giant toadstool in the middle with a huge stuffed owl on the top. A total of 400 Brownies from 18 Brownie packs in the district attended and in front of every pack stood a 'flower tree' made by the individual packs. The District Commissioners, including Mrs. Helen Gratis, Colborne greeted the brownies as they entered the 'Magic Garden' also welcoming everyone was a lady dressed in Japanese costume. The Brownies ate their lunch at their own 'tree', and when the magic gong rang all became alert listeners. For entertainment, each pack presented something to the group. Colborne Brownies sang 'The First Tulip' complete with actions. At 3.00 p.m the 'Magic Gong' sounded again, this time to tell the Brownies that the Revel was over.. Brownies and leaders learned a great deal from this day and came home having met many new friends discovered new ideas. Such a successful day would not have been possible without the help of Mrs. Foden and Mrs Smith who organized every detail so carefully, even to a Japanese Tea Ceremony complete with cookies. Mr. W E Barry kindly donated the part of the park to the Brownies for the day and to all who helped it was a great success. See you all next year, 1970 as it will celebrate 60 years of Guiding in Canada. COLBORNE PERSONALS____ ....... Mrs Clayton Taylor, Mrs N Simmons spent the weekend in Beaverton visiting friends.
