A Friendly Welcome -- A retarded child was discarded child twenty five years ago. So said Mrs Alex Mackie who presented an excellent discussion on mental health at the June meeting of the Colborne Wome-ns Institute held at the home of Mrs T M Gresham, attended by twentyone members and guests Homes for such children were gloomy and institutional. Now homes are bright and sunny, well furnished, well staffed and with the newest medical and psychiatric care available. Such children need love and care -- their parents need sympathy and understanding, not pity. There are seventy or more known causes of mental retardation, measles, meningitis, birth injuries, illnesses accompanied by high fevers etc. She went on to speak of the workshop in Cobourg where youngsters learn useful handicrafts and Cobourg hospital where the mentally retarded are educated to their fullest capacity. Some of the young women there go out to work in approved homes and earn some of their spending money. Others work in the Therapy workshop making party favors, hats etc.under contract. They also make rugs, do beautiful knitting and sewing. They have sports, parties a beauty parlor and some who are fine vocalists provide entertainment at concerts and other events. Among the correspondence were several letters from Eric Daniel our foster child who is doing well in school and looking forward to holidays. Colborne W.I along with Ridge Road will continue his sponsorship. For Agriculture and Canadian Industries, Mrs Whaley reported the building of a new Reynolds Aluminum Plant in Richmond Hill which will make all sorts of aluminum products for the Canadian market. The operator of a quick freeze plant in the U.S. freezes rasberries on a large scale. He distributed 504)00 bushes this year and will buy the fruit under contract. Many Canadians are growing berries for him under this scheme. For Home Economics and Health Mrs MacGregor mentioned that Canadian feet are growing bigger. Size five used to be an average size in women's shoes but eight is commoner nowadays. Medical costs have increased 8% recently. Mrs Anderson speaking on Citizenship and Education asked what we can do to make Canada a whole some and prosperous country. We should do our best here at home. We were pleased to have Mrs Ross Wright, St. Catherines a former member with us. Scripture - Mathew 25: 31-46, was read by Mrs. Honey followed by Hymn 365 and the topic 'Christian Hospitality' by Mrs. Walter Pearson. By a careful study of the Scripture we learn that hospitality is distinctly a Christian virtue (Romans 12: 10,12,13) (Titus 1: 7,8) (1 Timothy 3:2) (Hebrews 13: 1,2) if anyone wishes to read further. Dedication of collection and Hymn 380 closed the Devotional period. With the president Mrs. Gerald Waite in the chair considerable business was discussed, and plans made to cater for a wedding in July. Reports were given and thankyou notes read. Two readings were given, 'What Counts', Mrs Kenneth Mutton, 'Fathers Day' Mrs. Claude Gooderich. A lovely lunch was served by the hostesses. SPEAKS UP.
