Thursday, November 27, 1969 Colborne Chronicle page nine Leads Anti-Smokers "Ricky" The Raccoon "Students want to know FACTS about anti-smoking and diseases related to cigarette smoking," said Mrs. Barbara Cameron at the Northumberland-Durham Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association executive council meeting. Mrs. Cameron is assistant executive secretary of the association. After a resume of the successful '69 "Ricky" anti-smoking campaign conducted at 78 counties schools, Mrs. Cameron reported that the '70 campaign would take the form of "Ricky" rallies, the first to be held in the central counties area. The mascot for the project is a figure of "RICKY" the raccoon, designed by Mrs. Audrey McNaughton. He is attired in snazzy sports gear, sits in a small streamlined red racing car, beneath a green flag indicating "Let's Go." Mrs. McNaughton has also designed the puppets to be used, one of Ricky and a-nother of his sadly afflicted smoking cousin "Sad Sack Sam." With the cooperation of the board of education and health unit, and the Cobourg TB-RD Association, continued Mrs. Cameron, students will conduct their own programs, differing from school to school. Selected students from Grade 7 will attend rallies and use the information to begin a program which might include the use of Ricky puppets, contests, discussion groups, panels, or other ideas thought up by the students Tea, Bazaar and Sale OF HOME COOKING Sat. For Students -The Age Of The Sail Returns To The Lake Next rammer, students from many Ontario centres will be sailing Lake Ontario in a refurbished Lunenberg, Nova Scotia schooner. The restored vessel, a breath of Canada's sailing heritage, will sail out of Toronto Harbour May 2, 1970, under 8,900 square feet of canvass. Named the Harrv W Adams, the 147 ft long ex-Nova Scotia fisherman is longer than the original Bluenose and will provide membrable educational half day and full day trips on Lake Ontario for school students. For youngsters it will be a last chance to be a part of a romantic histo-y of Camdian sail when some 120 vessels of i this Lunenberg schooner type plied the fishing trade. The Adam's owner, Captain A Scoitt, who spent his early life in N;va Scotian schooners, had the foresight and sentimental attachment to save the vessel from being broken up and to bring her to Toronto where he operates a harbour tugboat company with two sons. Ships School Associatio, Inc. Toronto by arrangement with Captain Scctt, has adopted the boat for the summers student trips out of Toronto. The details for the short .exciting educational w-ages will be worked cut with individual school boards across Ontario. As a non pofit student education travel organization, Ships School Association has earned a respected name in overseas travel.
