Hon. William Finlayson, Minister of Lands and Forests, concluded the debate for the government, during which he took a direct thrust at L. J. Simpson, Liberal, Centre Simcoe, in charging the latter with being a follower of the Russian group leader of the Liberal Party, even adding the word communist to the group leader, inferred as M. F. Hepburn, M.P., provincial Liberal leader. Dr. Simpson asked a retraction of the word communist, and urged on by the allegation questioned where the Conservative party would stand when the "break" comes. "The break never comes in the Tory party," thundered Hon. Mr. Finlayson. "On this side of the House, there is only one leadership, only one party, united under the British flag, with Canadian and Imperial traditions. The only difference between the-Tory and otheT parties is that the Tory party goes on for ever." Replying to the demand for production of salaries of certain officials of the Hydro-Eleotric Power Commission, the Minister observed that this problem should be dealt with in such a way as not to em'barass the commission, while he lauded the ability ot F. A. Gaby, chief engineer, whom he described as being really the general manager of the greatest public ownership enterprise in the world. The matter should not be dealt with as a party political issue." The Minister also replied to the suggestion of W.E.N. Sinclair, Opos' tion Leader, to abolish the govern ment's contribution to the teachers' and civil servants' superannuation funds, in contending that the matter after careful consideration had been rejected, the feeling being that to abolish these grants would be to break a pledge made with these funds. Defending the government in its financial policies for the fiscal year, Hon. Mr. Finlayson pointed out that throughout the budget debate there had not been a single suggestion of impropriety on the part of the government, not even the suggestion that one cent had been spent without prop er care. "It is true the pubic debt has increased," he declared, "but so long as the people of the province want power, so long as they want good roads, and services of various kinds, so long will it be necessary to issue debentures and increase the debt." Mr. Sinclair demanded production of the highest salaries paid to Hydro officials contending that the public owns the service and is entitled to the information, while he also criticized the Highway Improvement Fund. Premier George S. Henry made a spirited defence of his holding of a block of $25,000 in Ontario Power Sej vice Corporation bonds beldfe' tlf%" Legislautre in explaining his position, contending the purchase was made long before there was any move of the Abitibi canyon power project failing to be completed or when there was the slightest possibility of thr^ government having to take over the enterprise. The Premier intimated that if any member of the Opposition wants to suggest that the slightest loss has been caused to the province by his possession of the bonds, and ACADEMY HILL April 11th, 1933 Mrs. W. V. Keeler and children are suffering with severe colds. Miss Pearl Samis is allowed to be up again, but Mrs. J. Samis is in bed with flu. Pratt visited Burnley relatives last week. ■Mtast of our local young men have secured employment for the spring, as follows: E. Lonsherry at his father's, E. McColIum at Mr. W. Underwood's, E. Milgate and W. Haines of Fenella at Mr. L. Jayne's, M. Lonsberry at Mr. N. Usher's, G. Thomas at Mr. L. Pratt's. Recent visitors were: Mrs. E. Joice in Cobourg, Mrs. J. Woodland of Glea-son's Corner's Corners at Mrs. L. Pratt's, Mr. C. Joice of Gleason's Corners at his father's, Mr. F. J. Usher of Wicklow at his brother's, N. Usher; Mr. E. Pratt of Castleton at his son's, L. Pratt. desires to ask for a Royal Commission enquiry into details of the same, he he can have that sweeping enquiry forthwith. Opposition members indicated they would not ask for this The Premier in a lengthy statement pointed to his early school days in which he elected to be a farmer, then learned to plough a straight and clean furrow, and all through his life he had followed the same course. These bonds, he pointed out, were purchased when he was Minister of Highways and not Premier, while he questioned when he had the bonds, and the gov ernmient commenced negotiations, what was he to do with them. "Could 1 refuse on behalf of the goverment to have nothing to do with this great important question tthe j Abitibi canyon development) which might ultimately be of tremendous benefit to the province, merely because I held a few of the bonds?" he questioned. "I could not. I was elected to serve the people and any personal consideration had to be pushed aside and was pushed aside. Nor oould I hand them to a broker to sell in the open Market. Having by son of my office acquired confidential information to the financial straits which the Otnario Power Service C poration found itself, it would have been manifestly improper for mi sell the bonds to a purchaser who had not the same information." As to the future of- the enterprise, the Premier declared: "when we have pulled out of the present depression, and the province is moving forward to its great destiny and the development of its unpanalled resources the people of Ontario will say that the acquisition of the Abitibi property by the Henry Government was wise and farsighted. I feel that when the matter comes to be viewed in its proper prospective, it will go down in history as one of the outstanding achievements in the development of the pro--vinice." Hion. Mr. Finlayson made a spirited ^denial to the stories appearing recently in the Toronto Star dealing with alleged irregularities in Northern Ontario road camps, while he issued a challenge to the newspaper to produce any information they might have on the situation! before the public accounts committee. He claimed that two reporters of the Star had posed as Ontario Government officials in seeking information from a priest and a township reeve, Rev. Father Routh-ier, of Cobell, an'd John Duffrene. reeve of East Ferris. CUPERIOD & -: STORE -:- Specials - April 13, 15, 17 - Specials PEANUT BUTTER-- 00 2 lb Glass Jar..............................
