It's Scout-Guide Week Church parade opens activities National Scout-Guide Week opened here Sunday, February 16, when rangers, guides and brownies, led by a color party, paraded to church. The week ends next weekend, and a dance for the Ranger and Venturer Companies of Brighton, Trenton and Smithfield, takes place in Trenton Sat., Feb. 23. Pack holidays are enjoyed by the brownie packs throughut the year, and the guides attend not only company camp, but other camps at Waupoos and Doe Lake. Most of the leaders have attended training sessions and there are several who Bringingin new members clubtopic The February meeting of the Union Community Club was held at the home of Mrs. Mary Bellamy on Wednesday, February 13. The meeting opened by repeating the creed and Lord's Prayer and singing "When He Cometh". Bible reading was by Mrs. Myrtle Iulg. The roll call was answered by "What I like to do in my spare time". There were some very interesting answers. Minutes were read and approved and different reports were given such as treasurer's report, flower, cards, etc. A vote of thanks was extended to new member Mrs. Kay Graham for opening her home for the first Ho-Bo Tea. The door prize was won by Mrs. Maria Lynes. The business part closed by repeating the benediction. Mrs. Helen Mcintosh was chairing the program and introduced Miss Vera Clark of Brighton who showed slides on the different styles of family life in Japan, India, France and Canada. A vote of thanks and a gift of appreciation was given to Miss Vera Clark. An interesting skit was given by Mrs. Helen Mcln tosh and Mrs. Helen Doidge entitled "Bringing in new members for a club". Lunch was served by the hostess and her assistants. The March meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Alice Haynes. are qualified camp and pack holiday guiders as well as Trainers. There will be a display of Guide and Brownie handicrafts as well as other items in the windows of Ross Chalmers Fuels Co. on Main Street this year as there has been every Scout-Guide Week for the past several years. Really grown Brighton Girl Guides has grown over the past 10 years from one guide company and one brownie pack to the size it is today which includes a ranger company, three guide companies and three brownie packs. There are 60 brownies, 35 guides, 8 rangers and one cabet led by a District Commissioner, Marolyn Flowers and District Blue and Brown Guider, June Amos as well as 11 Guiders, who are as follows: Captain Pat Gibbons; First Ranger Co., Captain Marolyn Flowers; First Guide Co., Captain Jan Taylor and Lieutenant Pat Poole of Ouch! 6 stitches! Safety Tip: don't use a hunting knife as a screw driver like Bill Dunk did over the weekend. You may wind up with six stitches and a sore finger too! CWL plans skate party The monthly meeting of Holy Angels Catholic Church Women's League was held last week. Mrs. Maggie Creighton, president, opened the meeting with the league prayer. Mrs. Mary Steingart read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were adopted as read. Mrs. McLaughlin read the trea surer's report. The skating party for the children was discussed and it will take place on the afternoon of March 20 at the arena. A bridge and euchre party is planned to be held at the Legion Hall on the evening of March 20 at 8 p.m. The meeting closed with a prayer by Mrs. Creighton and was followed by a lunch and social hour. second Guide Co., and Captain Pam Pettigrew and Lieutenant Jan Taylor of Thrid Guide Co. The Brownie Packs are led by, Brown Owl Pauline Mathews and Tawny Owl Terry Nicholson in First Pack, Brown Owl Pat Poole and fawny Owl Marilyn Thomp son of Second Pack and Brown Owl Diane Brooks with Tawny Owl Betty McGill of Third Pack. The Local Association is chaired by the District Commisioner with Mrs. Kay Twitchett acting as treasurer and Mrs. Betty Rennie as secretary. The organization is intended as support for the leaders and usually sponsors the annual Mother-Daughter banquet in May, as well as the yearly Cookie Day blitz. Thinking Day as Bade* Powell's birthday is known by the girls is observed by all Rangers, Guides and Brownies and there is usually some special activity planned to honour the founder. This year, Brigh ton girls of all ages are planning a combined meet ing in Trinity St. Andrews United Church Hall at which time pictures of "Our Cabana" the World Centre in Mexico, will be shown as well as a varied program which should appeal to every age group. Each leader and girl contri butes pennies which is turned over to the World Thinking Day Fund to aid those member countries of the guide organization who are less fortunate. The guiders area dinner will be held in Trenton on Thinking Day this year. Cubs active Brighton cubs have had a busy year under the guidance of John Taylor, cub leader, and assistants L. Mitz and Gordon Sommer- There have been many proficiency badges earned by the boys and they turned out in full force for a paper drive last fall. The boys did all the work in assembling the Santa Claus Parade float and everyone involved had a hectic but enjoyable time. February 21st is the birthday of B. P., the founder of the scout movement, and all the cubs learn about his many exploits not only as a hero at the Seige of Mefeking but his activities as World Chief Scout The annual cuboree is the main high point of the year when the boys get a taste of camping. Humble pie Today, a local resident is going to eat humble pie and admit that the Brighton Independent has survived past the date he fortold early in November. Another local resident who had a bit more faith in the survival of the new weekly is expecting to have his mid-morning coffee and donuts supplied by the doubting Thomas. Now living in Lindsay, he is still a keen member of the Boy Scout movement. Jim was enrolled as a Cub in 1958 and when his parents came to Brighton he became a member of Brighton "A" Pack where he earned two stars. He advanced to First Brighton Scout troop where he became troop leader and received his gold cord, bushman's thong and Queen Scout awards. He continued in various Rover crews and on moving to Lindsay after his marriage, became Scout Councillor oi; First Lindsay Troop in 1973. He is now Assistant District Commissioner of Victoria County District as well as having a Scout troop to lead every week. He has attended several jamborees among which were the Greek World Jamboree in 1959, Scouting in Action in 1965 and the Idaho World Jamboree in 1967. He is an experienced canoist and he and his wife, a former Brighton girl and a Guide captain now, enjoy a wilderness canoe trip vacation in the summer. The Wood Badge which Mr. Moulton just recently received is presented in recognition of leadership training and is the highest training recognition a Scouter may receive and takes a great deal of time and effort. Requirements are divided into two parts; one in class and the other spending a week in the woods at Bluesprings. Once a Scout, always a Scout, as founder Baden Powell said.
