Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Waffe and family, Hilton, were Thursday supper guests of Mrs. Roy Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mutton and sons, Scarboro, were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Chapman. Mrs. Myrtle Nelson and Carl, Shelter Valley and Miss Jean Cole, Coldsprings, were Sunday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Samons. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chapman, Bob and Philip, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Herrington, Brighton. Mrs. Walter Pearson returned home Thursday after spending several days with her sister Mrs. Bob Pretsell, Toronto, and visited her brother-in-law in the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Scott spent several days including New Years with her parents at Port Credit and his parents in Mrs. Eldred Eddy. Toronto. Miss Elma Pearson is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs. Donald Broomfield in Cobourg. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Waite and Connie returned to their home in St. Catharines on Sunday accompanied by his mother Mrs. R. Waite who will spend some time with them. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Packard attended the Legion dance in Colborne, New Year's Eve, and spent the night with Mr. and Mrs. George Blyth. Taken from the files of the Colborne Chronicle. January 1st -- On Thursday, January 1st, the first issue of the Colborne Chronicle was published. This issue marked the amalgamation of two of Ontario's oldest newspapers, the Colborne Express and the Colborne Enterprise. January 8th -- Mrs. Henry May was killed in a car accident near London, Ontario. Mrs. May was a neice oi Mr. and Mrs. William May. January 15th -- Colborne Council met for the inaugural meeting on January 5th with Reeve Harding and Councillors Griffis and Thompson present. Rabies outbreak in area . Mr. Austin Eddy returned home on Saturday accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Tinney and family of Cayauga, they spent the week-end with Mr. and Congratulations to Mr. and Douglas Irwin (nee Beverley Hubble) who were married New Years Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Oliver returned home Tuesday accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Bray and family who remained for New Years, other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Oliver, King City, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Oliver and sons, Cobourg, Stf. Sgt. and Mrs. Cecil Oliver and family, Stittsville, Mr. and Mrs. Herbie Oliver and son, Alliston, they remained for the week end. Mr. and Mrs. John Cooney attended a New Years Eve party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stickle's. Edville. Mrs. Grace Samson, Peterborough, called on Mrs. and Mrs. Roy Packard on Sunday afternoon. . Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilce, Carl and Roy, Shiloh, and Mr. Bert Wilce, Oshawa, spent New Years with Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Eddy. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Irwin visited Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Irwin in their new home in Keene, Saturday, attended the 80th birthday party of Mr. James Graham. Miss Bonnie Taft, Brighton, spent Wednesday night and Thursday with Miss Judy Mutton. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Martin and family, Brighton, spent New-Years with Mr. and Mrs. John Cooney. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mutton and Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Mutton called on Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Eddy on Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Mutton were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Morrison last Monday evening in honour of their 19th anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cooney and Joey, Cobourg, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Martin and faily, Brighton, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne McDonald, Edville, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Cooney. Mr. and Mrs. Herbie Trott-man and family were New Years guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Trottman, Brighton. Debbie remained for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Taft, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Taft. Bonnie and Bobby, Brighton, Mr. and Mrs. Stanton Lawrence, Oak Heights and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Dun-nett were New Years guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mutton. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mutton spent New Years with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mutton, Shiloh. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Trottman and family, Brighton, called on Mr. and Mrs. Herbie Trottman, Sunday evening, Debbie returned home. Sharon W.A. Sharon W.A. met at the home of Mrs. J. Whitehouse on December 16th, with fifteen members and one visitor. The President opened the meeting with Theme song and prayer. Mrs. Whitehouse read the Scripture lesson, the Christmas Story, and Mrs. Trenear opened the candle lighting service by lighting a large candle for the "Light of the World", and singing "Silent Night", then eight ladies each lit a candle to represent the Spirit of Truth Joy, Goodwill, Peace, Faith Hope, Love and people. The hymn, "Come Holy Spirit", was sung closing with prayer. Miss Nina Lacey gave a reading, "A Little Bit of Christmas". Mrs. VanWalsem then told a story "Drought". The meeting was closad i the Mizpah Benediction i r 60th wed- January 22nd -- The inaugural meeting oi T.S.A. South Cramahe was held on January 14th at S.S. No. 10. Rev. F. W. Taylor conducts the installation of officers for the Women's Association of the Colborne United Church. ' January 29th -- Mr. Lewis Keith Mutton passed away suddenly at Cobourg General Hospital. Mrs. W. Harber was elected President of the Castieton Community Club. East Northumberland High School Board held its inaugural meeting i n Brighton High School. Mr. Foster Boulton became the new Chairman for 959. February 26th -- Mrs. Harold Black of Creek Street, Colborne, was the lucky winner of a 1959 Ford at the Kiwanis Bingo held in Peterborough. The annual Scout Church parade was held in Trinity Anglican Church on Sunday, February 22nd. The Colborne Recreation Committee held a Family Night in the Grafton Arena which proved to be very successful. March 5th -- A Rededication Service was held in Salem United Church with a large congregation in attendance. The service was agreed upon after some redecorating had been done. The Colborne Public School held a Public Speaking Contest with Diane Henderson, Ian Cunningham and Carol Beale ning, first, second and third prizes. March 12th -- At a regular meeting of Council the 1959 Budget was discussed and a rate of 60 mills for Commercial and Industrial properties and 55 mills for Farm and Residential was set. At a meeting of the Centennial Committee approval was given for the purchase of 1000 rose bushes to be sold to the idents of Colborne and district. The Colborne C.W.L. held a iccessful quilting at the home of Mrs. Charles McGuire. March 19th -- The Colborne Chapter No. 82, E.S.. celebrated their 38th Birthday and Grand Officer's Night which was held in the Chapter Room of the Brighton Masonic Temple. Mrs. James Kemp, one of Colborne's oldest residents celebrated her 97th birthday on March 10th. March 26th -- Mrs. Evelyn Cammack was host to the Junior Willing Workers for the March meeting. Mr. H. Lisius of Toronto, one of the world's greatest pipe organ experts was in the process [ of rebuilding the pipe organ in February 5th -- The Canadian Legion forms !W Ladies Branch. The Branch as named the Bay of Quinte Ex-Service Women's Branch. Mrs. Elsie Rush of Colborne became the first President of the newly formed Branch. April 2nd -- Mrs. R. Joyce and Mrs. R. Colling entertained fourteen ladies of the Lakeport Community Club. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Grosjean were hosts to twenty members of the United Church Couple's Club. held in Shiloh School House. February 12th -- : a regular Council meeting held February 9th, Council voted to advance any money needed by the Recreation Committee until March when a financial statement would be available. Colborne United Church held their annual meeting on February 2nd after a splendid supper served by the ladies of tke congregation. February 19th -- The Durham and Northumberland Plowmen's Association held their annual meeting in the Town Council Chambers in Cobourg. regular Council meeting Reeve Harding introduced a By-law to form a Public Library Colborne. i The Hustlers Auxiliary of the United Church held their Valentine Tea in the Sunday School Auditorium. Canadian Legion members from Belleville, Trenton, Brighton, Colborne and Port Hope gathered at a meeting of trie Bay of Quinte Ex-Service Wo-Branch 579 to present April 16th -- The Centennial Committee held a public meeting in the Town Hall which was open for suggestions from the public. The Father and Son Banquet of the Scouts and Cubs was held in the Legion Hall. The guest speaker was Mr. Stan Simons from the Dept. of Lands and Forests? Residents of Colborne were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. Marian T. Thornton in Springfield, Missouri. Mrs. Thornton was on her way home to Colborne from a tour of California. April 23rd -- Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Jackson sre entertained in Pine Grove School on the occasion of their 25th Wedding Anniversary. The annual meeting of the Colborne Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Max Telford on Tuesday, April 14th. The Northumberland Music Festival committee met at the home of the President, Mrs. Gordon J. Davis, .North Street, Cot-borne. Final arrangements were made for the 26th Annual Music Festival to be held in Colborne United Church. April 30th -- The Colborne Recreation Band and Baton Corps attended the opening of the Maple Leaf Stadium on April 29th to display their talents. The Colborne Minor Hockey Club held their Father and Son Banquet in Grafton Town Hall. Close to 200 attended the banquet. Distribution for the 1959 edi-m of the telephone directory* for Colborne and district got under way this week. - May 7th -- The long awaited date of the Provincial Election was an-nced. Hon. W. A. Goodfellow, Minister of Agriculture announced that he would again seek re-election for the Progres-ve Conservatives. It was announced that Mr. Colin A. Crews of Trenton would be the new Liberal Candidate for Northumberland. Rev. F. W. Taylor was elected Chairman of the Cobourg Presbytery. About thirty friends, neighbours and relatives held a fare--ell party in the Dundonald Hall in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Oliver who were moving to Cobourg. May 14th -- Brig. Lyle Carr was the guest ;peaker at the Rotary Club meeting. Brig. Carr spoke on the "Army In Civil Defence." Mrs. Frank McGlettnon was host to the Senior Welling Work- P.C. Nomination meeting held in Warkworth, Hon. W. A. Goodfellow was the only nomi-for the June 11th Provincial Election. May 21st -- Miss Barbara Spencer, daugh-r of Mr. \and Mrs. Bruce Spencer of Colborne, returned home after spending a four day visit to Ottawa where she attended the conference, Adventure in Citizenship. The Colborne Pee Wee Ball Club opened their summer schedule at the Ball Park. May 28th -- The C.W.L. held their Membership Tea at the home of Mrs. C. Connally. Rehearsals got under way for Ve've Got a Play In The Festi-il", the new musical comedy by Court Stone, which the Canadian Light Opera Company brought to Colborne for the Centennial Celebrations.
