NEW PARASITIC DISEASE REPORTED IN ONTARIO CATTLE Dr. David Campbell of the • Ontario Veterinary College, Department of Parasitology, has recently reported that a paras-disease of cattle exists in widely separated parts of Ontario. The parasite is a small intestinal worm and it is caus-a serious set-back in the calves in some herds. The exact geographic distribution is now known, but cases have been found on farms in Northern, Eastern and Western Ontario. The parasite has been known to exist in Ontario for some time, but it is only recent-that it has been recognized a problem. The disease affects calves and usually becomes apparent sometime after the animals are 6 weeks old. Affected animals develop persistent scours and fail to make satisfactory gains. The animals continue to eat well but they go down in flesn very quickly. Occasionally animals die from the effects of the disease. The disease is spread from calf to calf in the manure. According to Dr. Campbell, clean calf pens are essential if the disease is to be prevented. Care should be taken to see that calves are not penned or pastured where other cattle or dves have been kept recently. Microscopic examination of le faeces is the only reliable means of diagnosing Nemn-todirias. The examination may carried out by a veterinarian a veterinary laboratory. A it drug will be available in uie near future for the treatment of the disease. The disease may be prevented if good sanitary procedures are followed the housing of calves.
