King Street Scene Of Serious Accident [Colborne Brownie Pack Hold Jubilee i Birthday Party - Invite Grafton Brownies A car driven by Richard Peebles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Peebles, Division Street, Colborne skidded on the ice last Friday night and crashed into the back end of a car driven by Ford Cowie, King Street* Colborne. Peebles who was driving East on Highway No. 2 through Colborne applied his brakes when he saw the Cowie car turning into the Garage owned by Bruce Griffith, after a heavy snow fall during the day the roads were covered with ice and the car could not stop. After hitting the back end of the Cowie Car. Peebles lost control and continued on about forty feet and came to rest under the back end of a tandem trailer, owned by Skippen Transport which was parked on the garage lot. Public Speaking Contest Held In Town Hall The annual Public Speaking Contest of the Colborne Public School was held in the Colborne Town Hall on Monday, February 22nd. Sixteen speakers from grades six, seven and eight took part. The first prize cup which was donated by Senator Fraser in 1930 was won by Diane Henderson who spoke on "Child-Lynda Tutty placed second and was presented the Lowell Harnden Memorial Cup for her speech on "My Cat." The third prize cup was won by Carol Beal who spoke on "Magic Tricks." The other competitors Gwen Pattison, Glenn m Judy Campbell, Sharon cock, Tom Sheldrick. Sharon Seely, Ian Cunningham, Guy Grosjean, Peter Day. Ann Ferguson, Gerald Seely, Maureen Parker and Jack Hill. Each received a fountain pen for his or her splendid effort. The speeches were interspersed by several two part choruses presented by Room five pupils under the direction of their teacher Norman Walpole. The judges were teachers from Colborne and neighbouring rural schools. While the judges were totalling scores, a film of Colborne Centennial was shown by Mr. . G. Irvine. On Friday evening, February -26, Diane will represent Colborne Public School in the County Contest at Warkworth. She also reminded the Brownies that the Girl Guides of Canada are celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year and this was one of many parties which would be held across Canada in 1960. Brown Owl, Mrs. J. Lynn, introduced Mrs. K. Redner, who lit the first candle to represent the "Spirit of Guiding". From this candle the Brownies lit smalled candle, as we thought of countries all over the world. Celebrate Golden Wedding On February 20, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Mutton celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the home of their son Mr. Douglas Mutton, Dundonald. They received their friends there in the afternoon and evening when about 180 persons called to express their good wishes. Receiving with Mr. and Mrs. Mutton were their attendants of fifty years ago, Miss Florence McMillan, sister of the bride and Mr. Garnet Mutton, brother of the groom. Celebrating with them were their five children, Mrs. Clinton Irish (Margaret) of Peterborough. Douglas and John of Colborne, Roy of Scarborough and Mrs. Don Swain (Rena) of Ottawa. Ten of their eleven grandchildren also joined in the celebrations. . Guests were met at the door by Mrs. Douglas Mutton and Mrs. Margaret Irish.
