Although the human race has learned a lot since the first century AD., we are to-day like ' A Friend of Sinners " Rev. James Gibson In Luke 7-31 I read that Jesus was "A Friend of Publicans and Sinners." Notice how the enemies of Christ witness that He is a friend of the outcasts of this world. Those who would slander The Lord Jesus Christ could not help seeing that there was a strange kind of mutual attraction between Jesus and sinful men. The sinful woman of the street, the publican and little children seemed to be attracted to Him. He also seemed to delight in the company of those, who partly from pride and partly from self-righteousness, would gather their skirts around them in abhorrence, lest a speck from those unclean sinners should fall on their purity. This being true, these low natures, who always seem to misjudge higher and loftier natures said of Him, "You can see what kind of a man He is by the company He keeps, He is a friend of publicans and sinners because He likes their wicked ways." There was a peculiar sense of sympathy that drew Jesus to these poor people and drew them to Him. It would be a long time before a sinful woman would come and weep at the feet of the Rabbi Samuel and His like. It would be a long time before any sinful man would find his way with tears to any of these self-righteous hypocrites. Bui perfect purity somehow seems to attract the impure, when a sumed sanctity always repels them. It is a sign, the early Christians who expect-'not that a m\n is bad, but that ed the end of the world almost [he is good, in a Christ-like man-at any moment. To-day we have ner, if the sinful outcasts of our iron and bamboo curtain, | society, who T.are not come near and it is only human nature top'our so-called respectable want to peek over a spiked people, draw near to him. If fence. The world of 1914 and [there were more people like earlier has gone forever and we | Jesus, in His purity there would must adjust ourselves to new I be more men of whom it would conditions. We must develop a be said they are friends of sin- over a wicked city, when we see Him welcoming narlots and sinners to His side and giving them a new hope. When we see Him opening His heart to all the impure, just as He laid His clean hand on the lepers ulcers. Let us rejoice that this friend of sinners was God manifest in the flesh. This seeking love of His for all the outcasts of society gives a boundless hope for even the most degraded. We hear talk sometimes of races too low to be raised and men too hardened to be softened. However, Jesus Christ walks this world and sees none who are incurable. His hope for all men is boundless because, first He sees the dormant possibilities for good even in the most degraded. Secondly He knows that He bears within Himself a power that will cleanse the foulest and raise the most fallen. No man or woman is so absolute besotted and held by the chains of their sins that Jesus cannot set them free. He also knows that every sin can be cleansed by His blood. Yes Jesus drew publicans and sinners to Himself and made saints out of them. This power is the great Glory of Christ and of His Church. Men are asking the question: Is Christianity played out? I answer, what has be*en the motivating power of all the great movements for the elevation of mankind during the past 1900 years? What power struck the fetters off the slaves? What power is it that sends men out amongst savage tribes? Has there ever been found a race of men so degraded that the message of Christ's love did not reach their hearts. Only when the church loses its power to draw and care for the outcasts and sinners of this world, will she lose her power. The Friend faculty of wonder as we search 'ners. into space, we must have more humility, more honesty, we must use our brains and acquire an intense love of God and of man. We pray: Thy will be done. That is Heaven. God gives us a choice and says to us: Thy will be done. If we choose wrongly, that is Hell. Times of Services Presbyterian Churches Services at Old St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Colborne, will be held at 10 a.m. and at St. Paul's, Lakeport, at 9 a.m. during the months of June, July and August of this year, to enable St. Andrew's Brighton to „ . hold morning services at 11.301 Cobourg. godparents, Miss Suz- This arrangement has long been in the stage of wishful thinking and we hope that this there i s a proof of His love, nothing more wonder-the unique picture of as seen in the Gospels, than the way in which two things always stand out in His nature. The first infinite tenderness, the second absolute condemnation of sin. Indeed the picture we have of Jesus in the Gospels is a combination of perfect purity and perfect love for the impure. And this love was Divine. The love of God for the outcast sinners of this world. Jesus said, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father". When we see Jesus weeping of Sinners has set i example of us, His followers. Let us go to them, with a rebulse for their sin and yet love in our hearts. We will find that just as Jesus drew such outcasts to Himself, so shall we. Let us also remember that Jesus is our friend because He is a friend of sinners and we are all sinners. How do we know that He is our friend, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down His life for His friends". When we were a long way off Christ died for us and was our friend. How can we repay His love. Only by yielding ourselves in iaith and love to Him and thus become His friend. and Mrs. Allen Learmonth; Richard Terrance, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard T.
