Council To Purchase Canadian Canners Factory At East Colborne The regular meeting of the Colborne Council was held on June 13th with the following members present: Reeve W. J. Troop and Councillors Cotter, Griffis and Moore. Minutes of the last regular I meeting were read and adopted on motion of Griffis and IV Chas. Philp requested that the Council consider the matter of a ditch on Kensington Ave, to help take care of water now causing trouble on Public School property. Mr. J. W. Summers brought to the attention of Council the fact that a natural water course in his area had been blocked and that now it was coming on his property and flooding his Council discussed both matters and decided that the Streets Foreman and Streets Committee should investigate both areas and report back. Mr. C. L. Keating reported to council regarding some of the problems facing the High School Board. Reeve Troop thanked Mr. Keating for coming and bringing council up to date on these matters. W. Lee, Fire Chief, informed Council that the mines at Bancroft were closing down and that there was a considerable quantity of IVz fire hose that could be purchased at reduced prices. It was decided that the Fire and Property Committee should be asked to investigate the amount of hose on hand and decide if this matter should be further looked into. An application for a building permit to build a carport was received from Lucas Mulder. On motion of Cotter and Moore it was agreed to grant permit for this purpose. Reeve Troop reported to council on the negotiations for the East Colborne factory of Canadian Canners, stating that the factory, the contents of the boiler room and the stack could be purchased for $2750 and asking that council authorize the conclusion of this deal. Moved by Councillor Moore and seconded by Councillor Griffis that this council authorize the Reeve and Treasurer to purchase the plant of Canadian Canners in East Colborne for the sum of $2750 including the contents of the boiler room and stack. The money for the purchase of this property to be taken from monies received from the Mrs. G. Elliott Estate. Carried. Moved by Griffis and seconded by Moore that the Streets Committee be authorized to purchase scraper blade attachment for tractor. Carried. Moved by Cotter and seconded by Moore that Mr. A. H. Ward, Municipal Engineer, be requested to inspect the bridge on Ontario Street and advise regarding rebuilding of same. Carried. Moved by Griffis and seconded by Moore that accounts presented be paid. Carried. Moved by Councillor Griffis and seconded by Councillor Cotter that Council adjourn to the call of the chair. Carried. COLBORNE ROTARY The Colborne Rotary Clubs meeting on |MJonday (evening, enjoyed as guest speaker, Mr. Norman Neil, Public Services Branch, QMtario Hydro from Toronto. Mr. Neil gave a very interesting talk on the development of the power project on the St. Lawrence Seaway. His talk was illustrated by a film, From Dream to Reality. Guests were present from Coboujrg and Swansea Clubs, also Mr. Mac Campbell, manag-of the local Public Utilities. Plans were made to hold Ladies Night on July 11. The third monthly draw for made to measure suit was won by Alf Dove. This makes three Colborne winners. Be sure to get your ticket for next months draw. The Club is to have the pleasure lot taking the Colborne Recreation Band and Baton Corps to Merrywood Crippled Childrens Camp on Wednesday June 20, to entertain the camp- Music x60 Dancers Rotary Swimming Classes Rotary Swimming Schedule, west shore, Little Lake, commencing July 4, for eight weeks. Individual cards have been sent out to the 205 children registered, Notifying them of the time of their lessons. For further information contact C. Nobes, Recreation Director, Phone 406 Colborne. Castleton W. A. The regular meeting of the W.A. was held on Thursday afternoon at Mrs. R. Lawrasons. Mrs. W. Covert presiding, opened the meeting with a Psalm and the W.A. Theme Song followed by thoughts "Not Getting Weary in Well Doing" and "The Great Reward of Doing Small Deeds", followed by prayer. Minutes were read and approved. Meetings will be cancelled for July and August and the September meeting will be held at Mrs. W. Coverts with the W.M.S. as guests and Mrs. R. Barlow will be convener. The roll call "Patience" was answered by all members. Mrs. C. McKague opened the programme with a poem "The Echo" followed by a hymn. Mrs. Lovering gave a talk on some of her experiences. Mrs. G. Ellis and Mrs. L. Spencer gave a piano duet, "The Dance of the Shadows". Mrs. C. Nelson conducted a Scripture cake. Mrs. L. Darling had a reading and the programme closed with a hymn. A lovely lunch was served Tjy Mrs. C. McKague and Mrs. H. Welton. Wedding Anniversary On Sunday, June 26th, a large gathering of relatives and friends met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Yule, Dartford, to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. It was a complete surprise for them arranged by their family. After a buffet lunch, topped off by a lovely anniversary cake, provided by their daughters, they were presented with several nice gifts and a purse of money. Relatives attended from Toronto, Campbellford, Warkworth, Cord Springs and Colborne. Also their family, Alex, at home and Mr. and Mrs. E. Galbraith and Bobbie of King, Mr. and Mrs. Don Grills and family of Dartford and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jones and Charlie of Castleton. E.N.D.H.S. Board Meet In Brighton The regular meeting of the East Northumberland District High School Board was held at the Brighton High School on the evening of June 10th, 1960, with all members of the Board present, Chairman Wm. T. Moran presiding over the meeting. <Also present were A. M. Fulton, Marry S. Ewing and W. R. Bax- The minutes of the last regular and one special meeting were read and approved on motion by Wesley C. Down, seconded by N. N. Haggarty. Reports were received fram the principals on the operation of the two schools. It was moved by Wesley C. Down, seconded by Foster Boulton, that we approve the style of school uniform as shown at this meeting for the use of girls attending this school, on the understanding that it shall not be compulsory for anyone to wear any type of uniform. On motion by W. O. Graham, seconded by R. J. Ross, permis- sion was granted for leave of absence to Mr. Parker and Mr. Robb for periods requested. It was agreed on motion by A. A. Kemp, seconded by N. N. Haggarty, that we extend the use of sanitary dispensers to the new wing of the same variety presently in use. It was agreed on motion by R. J. Ross, seconded by Wesley C. Down, that we purchase science room equipment from Castleton School as outlined by Mr. Mc- On motion by A. A. Kemp, seconded by Foster Boulton, it was agreed that we grant the use of the auditorium to Mrs. Baker for a recital on Friday, June 24th, subject to the usual regulations. Accounts as presented were approved for payment on motion by Foster Boulton, seconded by Sam Netley. On motion by R. J. Ross, seconded by Foster Boulton, the meeting did then adjourn until the next regular meeting to be held on July 8th, 1960, at 8.00 p.m. or at the call of the Chairman. Carried. SPECIAL MEETING A special meeting of the East Northumberland District High School Board was held on the afternoon of June 14th, 1960, at Brighton, with all members of the Board present. At this time Mr. Roberts, architect and Mr. Tatham, contractor, were pres- A thorough inspection of the addition was made with a view to accepting same from the contractor. It was moved by Wesley C. Down, seconded by Sam Netley, that we accept the building as completed as of this date, with stated deficiencies in the amount of $1000.00 which will be deducted from the original contract price.
