Page Four THE COLBORNE CHRONICLE, Thursday, July 7th, 1960 BY DOROTHY BARKER Two rather significant things happened during the first two weeks of June. Plans were completed for representatives of a new organization called "The Voice of the Women", Toronto's new disarmament group, to place their objective before Prime Minister Diefenbaker „ and Liberal Leader Lester Pear-' companion. Mr. and Mrs. Fred It was typical of this energet- fhrown' Campbellford called in ic woman that she should choose newspaperman as her life's elected to the Provincial Parli-ment of Nova Scotia. The objective of the new organization to enlist the women of the world in a campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons. The blessing of government leaders, it was considered, would lend strength to the campaign. If there is a spark of truth in the old saying that "the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world", the vision of world peace has a chance of At least these greatly alarmed women deserve cheers for their effort. Th significance lies in the fact that Gladys Porter of Kentville, Nova Scotia, though not the first Canadian woman to seek public office, is a thoroughly conscientious and dedicated representative of the people. Whafs more, she is an enthusiastic supporter of our democratic way of life. I met her last year when I travelled by train to attend the Annapolis Valley Blossom Festival. At that time she was serving her tenth term as Mayor of Kentville. She is a Junoesque, silverhaired grandmother, feminine to her finger tips but with a keen analytical mind and a highly developed sense of duty. If some persons are born with a silver spoon in their mouths, Gladys Porter, nee Richardson, must have been born with a gavel in hers, to use a platitude. She comes by her political aspirations naturally for her father, brothers and an uncle have all made their mark in the Nova Scotian political arena. Her father, Wallace A. Richardson, was mayor of Sydney for 17 years, as Well as being the editor of the Sydney Post Record now the Cape Breton Post. Just as behind every successful man there is said to be a woman, behind Gladys Porter is an understanding husband. It was my observation that it is the evening. How this little pebble, thrown into the pool of world chaos, may extend its tiny circle will not depend on the enthusiasm of the women who tossed it, but on the reception it is given in the far reaches of democracy and how much it arouses the women of the NATO countries. If mothers of the world stand shoulder to shoulder in their demands for disarmament, and more women are willing to stand for public office, I believe there may be pome hope for humanity's survival.
