The Voice Of The Church A WEEKLY MESSAGE BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR LOCAL MINISTERS Knowing God Rev. R. K. Harris "Then shall we know if we follow on to know the Lord." Hosea 6:3. As we read this text our first impulse would be to say, yes! I know the Lord. In fact I've known Him from the time I was a small child." But as I thought of it earnestly I could not help but wonder if we really do. So often we are prone to declare that we know someone when the truth of the matter is that we only know about them. There is a great difference. So often we know about somebody and our knowledge is based upon things we have heard from others or surmised from a chance meeting, then later as cultivate a relationship with this one, we grow to know them and so often we are shocked, and just a little ashamed, to find that knew about them was either false or a misunderstanding. When it comes to the Lord, perhaps everyone of us can say that from the time we were small children we have knerwn about Him. Our parents and Sunday School teachers told us stories about Him and painted us pictures about Him from their own understanding. However, being told about someone by another and amassing a great deal of head-knowledge or facts about them is not the same as coming into a close fellowship with them and knowing them for yourself. From my childhood I have known about the Lord. The conception I had of Him from the teaching of my parents and others was certainly a good introduction, but it was no more thaffl that. It rested with" me alone to move beyond the introduction and cultivate the friend- Surely Paul the Apostle knew about God for He was a master in the law and prophets. Yet in the fourth chapter of Philip-pians he crys, "That I might know Him and the fellowship of His suffering and the power of His resurrection being made conformable to His death." He knew all about the Lord and had many experiences with Him both before and after his conversions, yet he declared there was for him a place of knowing God in a more intimate way. Further on in the chapter he states that he doesn't walk as though he already had attained or already was perfect, but he declared, "This one thing I do; forgetting those things that are behind and reaching forth to the things that are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus!" Hosea the prohet in the text I have chosen speaks of "Following on to know the Lord." In all too many cases we find Christians who are content to say they know Him and are basing" their knowledge upon their original introduction to Him. They may know about Him, but only by consecrating their lives to a more intimate relationship with Him through prayer and reading of His Word, can they ever hope to know Him. I believe the cry of many Christians both passed and present can be summed up in these few words, "Only to know Him, Only to know Him, Is the prayer within my heart; Not just in a measure, But in His fullness; This, O Lord, is the cry of my I will call upon the Lord, which is worthy to be praised: so shall a I be safe from mine enemies.
