W. Chisholm & Son by Rev. J. A. Roney Not the latest movie in the theatre at Trenton or Cobourg, nor the music the choir will sing, nor the size of the tree, nor the smell of the Christmas meal, but God's own Son -- is the coming attraction. We will celebrate on Sunday the birth of Jesus Christ. Don't forget Him on His birthday. Go to church if you are able, and if you are elderly, crippled or ill ask the church's representatives to visit you. Turn on the radio or the T.V. and spend some time listening and watching, singing and acknowledging with others the Messiah's coming -- His Advent. If you think that relatives or friends are coming, put a note on the door "Gone to Church--| be home at Noon" (or '2.30'). Don't let them make you put. God in second place. If you, have a large meal to prepare, let it be late because you're going to eat a late breakfast anyway. No one has a right to get in the way of the coming attraction whose arrival we hail on Christmas Day. The need to make the effort to worship "the new-born King" on His birthday is so obvious that I wonder if we have forgotten it. We worship Him on earth so that some day when we die (or better still, when He comes again as Judge) we may know Him, and He may know us'. We need to make His acquaintance now "for the night is far-spent the day is at hand." If we delay the privilege and the chance may be lost, and we will be lost with them. And if you had already planned to go to church, because it is your habit, don't let it be routine. Consider who is the attraction, and the meaning of the child's birth. Why did God do it? He did it for us so that He could redeem us from the I wrongness of life we call sin. We can bring our conscious needs for forgiveness, our admission of our need to be redeemed by Him. We need to bring thankful hearts and joyous minds. It has been a long year, as every year is long, and yet the time is short. This may be your last opportunity to say to God, "I'm sorry." God is waiting to hear you, and to see you join with the Holy Fellowship of the Church this Christmas. "O may we keep and ponder in God's wondrous love in saving lost mankind; Trace we the Babe, who has retrieved our loss, Tread in His steps, assisted by his grace, Till man's first heavenly state again take place." (John Byrom, 1730) "Christians awake, salute the happy morn!" COLBORNE ROTARY The final meeting of this year was marked by the Rotary Club with carol singing, instead of the usual sing-song, at the Queen's Hotel, last Monday evening, with Mrs. Irvine assisting ably with both piano and voice. Russ Manning visited from Cobourg. Several matters of interest were discussed and the ladies of the hotel staff were presented with small gifts in token of the club's appreciation for their services through the year. | Carl Chatten, a member of 4-H, was introduced to us by Gordon Metcalf, as guest speaker of the evening. Carl recently attended the Royal Winter Fair, under the sponsorship of the club, and his talk of the trip and of the things he saw at the Fair, was very well given. Much credit is due Gordon Metcalf and others who do so much for the young people of our rural area. Carl was thanked by George Moore. Next meeting January 3rd. H. R. Hunt, M.A., D.D., administered the rite of Laying on of Hands at the Confirmation Service for forty-nine members of the combined parishes of St. Paul's, Brighton, and T 'nity Church, Colborne, (including one member from St. Peter's, Lakeport). Assisting the Bishop at the service were: Rev. 3. A. Roney, Rector of the combined parishes, Mr. Alec Hardie, Diocesan Lay Reader, Rev. Canon E. A. Slemin and Mr. James Small, with Mr. N. Copple of Brighton, at the organ. Following the Laying on of Hands, which is always a very inspiring and solemn ceremony, the hymn, "King of Love, O Christ, We Crown Thee," was sung as an anthem by the combined choir. In his address, Bishop Hunt recalled the installation of our Rector, Rev. J. A. Roney, by himself, a scant six months ago, and of the "wonderful class, young and old", prepared for this occasion by the Rector and his assistants. "This, therefore," he said, "is an event of great happiness and of a great joy." He recounted the history of the rite of laying on of hands, its antiquity as a Jewish custom, its adoption by the Christian Church, and of its spiritual meaning to those who are confirmed. "The joy of the Lord is your strength." The Rector, speaking to the congregation, thanked those who had assisted him, giving freely of their spare time, preparing such a large class for confirmation. A reception, giving all opportunity to meet and chat with the Bishop and one another, was afterward held in the Parish Hall. Refreshments were served by ladies of Trinity Church. Blessed is the man that hata not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners: and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful. Psalm 1:1
