When completed it will be the new Highway 28 and the section of the present highway between Rossmount and north of Bewdley will be handed over to the township. He was supported by Reeve Gordon Carruthers and Albert Emond but councillors Lloyd Williams and Allan Dines opposed the motion. There was strong opposition from Bewdley residents however and the councillors decided not to go ahead with the renaming of the road immediately but to allow a "cooling off" period to allow the emotion to die down. In March the Bewdley trustees presented the council with a petition signed by 277, residents of Bewdley, Campbellcroft, Bailieboro, old highway 28 and other regular users of the road who wanted it named Rice Lake Scenic Road. The villagers felt that tourists would be more likely to follow a scenic road to Rice Lake than they would a Scriven Road which did not indicate where it led. Joseph Scriven was a protestant lay preacher who used to travel between Port Hope and Bewdley working with the poor. He wrote the hymn "What a Friend we have in Jesus" and lived for a while on the swamp road in Bewdley. Chairman of the Bewdley trustees said' today she was "very very pleased" that the council had decided to name the road "Rice Lake Scenic Drive." "This is what the villagers wanted," she said. "The road affects their livelihood and welfare." Miss Clay said she had no objection to the council deciding to call it a drive rather than a road which was originally requested by the trustees. "I understand they felt that a drive indicated a more scenic road with lots of twists asnd turns," she said. "We certainly have no objection to that." The section of highway 28 from Rossmount to north of Bewdley has to be renamed because the Bewdley bypass road which is currently under construction will become, highway 28 when it is completed. The MTC has resurfaced the section of old highway 28 which is to be handed over to the township but they require a name for the road before the work is completed so they can erect the signs. Reeve Gordon Carruthers said that the bus would leave TCS Mr. Carruthers said if any of the designers wanted to go back at at about 9 a.m. and tour later date to visit a par-the Hamilton township ticular point of interest it countryside. "I wish we had more time to stop and show them around", Mr. Carruthers said. ' 'We will be making a would be arranged. The party will have lunch at the new Dalewood golf course before returning to TCS. THE NEW RICE LAKE SCENIC DRIVE. The Rossmount to Bewdley will become Rice Lake scenic twists and turns in Highway 28 from Scenic Drive when the bypass is completed. Hope will meet Port Hope first Before Hope township and the town of Port Hope go to a meeting of Port Hope, Cobourg, Hope and Hamilton to discuss boundary changes they will sit down together to thrash out problems and policy. The joint meeting was suggested by township administrator, Barbara Merson, who said she had been talking with Port Hope administrator, W.E. Hunt, and the idea had come up. Hope council agreed to invite Port Hope to a meeting on Sept. 4 even though councillor George Stapleton thought Port Hope should call the meeting. "I think the ones who are boundary changes should meeting", Councillor creating the pressure for be the ones to call the Stapleton said. When After September 1, 1974, all used vehicles must be inspected at a Motor Vehicle Inspection Station prior to the time of sale or transfer. Service stations licenced by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to carry out a Safety Standards Certificates inspection will display this sign. Deputy-reeve Weston Banister initiated a motion to set up a meeting with Port Hope council for a preliminary discussion of boundary changes, it was seconded by Councillor David Gray. Councillor Laurent Leoen voted in favor of the motion and the other two members of council, Reeve Howard Quantrill and Councillor Stapleton did not vote. Mrs. Merson said that these changes would be just inerim changes to see what land Port Hope needs for two years to grow. The administrator stated that the major problem is with Cobourg and Hamilton. "Port Hope has some land to expand within its boundaries and they may take some from Hamilton township on the east side", Mrs. Merson said. "If this is just for two years why does Hope have to be touched?", she asked. The administrator suggested writing a letter to Donald Irvine saying that Hope township need not be touched because of the above reasons and because Hope has an official plan and zoning controls approved by the minister. Deputy-reeve Banister said, "I see no harm in setting up a meeting with Port Hope to discuss things. We have the least to gain or lose by it". Councillor Stapleton said he felt Port Hope should call the meeting because they are putting pressure on Hope. "They can pay the shot, we aren't putting pressure on Port Hope". "Sure we are. Look at the Hydro plant at Wesleyville", Councillor Gray said. "Yeah, and we're going to keep it", Councillor Stapleton interjected. "We're putting pressure on both Port Hope and Cobourg for housing", Councillor Gray said, "All those workers aren't going to live in Hope township". Seven maps, two synopsis and a cost sheet for amalgamations within the township were also mentioned at the meeting. These alternative proposals for amalgamation of municipalities in Northumberland county were prepared for the county council by Municipal planning consultants. They were presented to the county planning committee and forwarded to the individual municipalities for comment. Hope council decided to study their copy before discussing the possibilities.
