W.R. Scott stencil – Canadian Apples
DetailsLadders, baskets, and barrels were some of the items critical to the apple harvest crop. W. R. Scott had the Montreal Works Stencil make this stencil for his apple business. The painted lettering left from stencilling identified each orchard's barrels. Sturdy black ash splint baskets held the apples as the pickers worked their way through the orchard. These expertly woven baskets were made by the Mississauga of Alderville First Nation or the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. Basketmaking continues as an important tradition and creative expression within many Aboriginal communities.
