The waterfront harbour of the village of Lakeport holds many stories of maritime adventure from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rich history of its captains, schooners, steamers, and liquor smuggling number among the interesting accounts of Lakeport's maritime past. Shipbuilding prominently figured in the village's economy. A customs house in Lakeport documented and levied taxes to the goods which were transported by ships across the international border. Many goods, especially high quality Canadian lumber, headed south to American markets.
